Called "American cheese" if that means anything.

Yep. That's actually cheese that's been highly "processed" and it's the "cheese food product" that I mentioned. It's also called "American Process" cheese. It's "adequate" for a quick cheese sandwich for the kids (especially a grilled cheese sandwich) or on a cheeseburger cause it's cheap and melts easily. But even then it's not the best choice at all.

It's never used in actual cooking.
