Along the same lines as a recent post regarding large knives for bushcraft use, i have been considering a Khukri as they seem reasonably priced and would eliminate the need to carry an axe or saw also. Is there any particular Khukri that anybody can recommend? i have been considering one from these guys www.thekhukurihouse.com

also are there any of you that use one of these as your main bushcraft style knife with maybe a small back up?

Appreciate your thoughts!

Dan

Have you looked at Bearclaws site?
I was bought one as a present and although it has not had lots of use so far I like it.
Still like my axe though!

Khukuri House produces a top quality, reasonably priced khukuri -- so no worries there.

I use my khukuri about 30 percent of the time -- for me it doesn't replace my bushcraft knife, but does replace the axe.

I'm more likely to carry the khukuri if I anticipate collecting wood for bows as I'll use it as a drawknife (khukuris can be *great* field draw knives) to rough out staves to take back and cure before finishing. If you want, you can bang out a serviceable bush bow with a khukuri in record time.

If you're thinking about other big blades -- like the kabar marine knife, bowie, etc -- then in my mind, the khukuri is a vastly better choice because it can serve so many roles.

But they can be heavy and you can scare people silly on the trail with them -- so be mindful of that. I never carry it on my belt, always in the backpack.

you really need to try one as the handle can be a bit small for western hands.
If you have large hands you'll find your hands cramping after extended use with some models.
I use a cold steel LTC most often. It's a little "tactical", but it's far more comfortable to use than my regular Khukri.

i have one from tora blades good honest blade the army model is great for bushcraft i removed the ring around the middle of the handle to make it fell better :)

I've gota agree with Graham about trying them first not only for handle size but some people just can't get the knack of how to use them effectively. I've got a few different types/sizes and I use a cold steel kukri for taking hunting it's great for hide making and very light weight sturdy tool, but I do find the handle a little small on it but tightly wound paracord around the handle sorted that out and it gives me some spare emergency cordage.

I made a new sheath for mine, check the link. Its a Suipate from KH, the place you are considering buying from. The mistake is to buy a 'military one' which is both tactical ie for hitting people with, and survival. The Suripate is a bit thinner and and straighter and is designed for general 'farm/domestic' work. They take a bit of getting used too, as each area of the blade is for a differant purpose, if you have the right size you can do without a knife as well, will even act as a draw knife. Pretty versatile tool.

I wish I had one to play with before I purchased an axe, I find it far more useful in our kind of woodlands. I now dont bother with an axe at all.

I think de Coldsteel Kukri Machete associated with a Mora is the best price/quality/versatility/low weight choice for bushcraft.

I have a PRC or Train Kukri, and the Handle is larger the usual service issue one,And the Blade is also alot thicker,Works well as a Chopper, and is surprizingly good for quite fine work.
