Ben Fogle Socks

I don’t normally do reviews but as I found none for these socks on the web I thought I’d post my experiences.

In brief I’m not very impressed, they are very comfortable but for such an expensive sock they are not very long lasting.

I bought mine at the Outdoors show in London on the 15th of January, apparently that was the first place they went on sale in the UK. I bought one pair of Arctic and one pair of Expedition socks.

I have used Thorlo mountain socks for a few years, most often for work (steel-toe capped boots) , they last a long time and are comfortable, but my last few pairs are wearing out so I was looking for replacements when I can across these socks at the Outdoors show.

They are very comfortable and very soft, the salesman said that they had heel etc padding but this isn’t as evident as on other mountain socks I’ve owned.

I have worn these once or twice a week for the last 4 and a bit weeks, walking between 4 and 8km a day (walking to and from the station, around site and even on one or two weekends into the woods). I don’t consider this exceptional use, and yet after only a month a hole has appeared in the toe (my toe nails are very short, and I’ve not used these socks in any way differently to my Thorlo’s).

So in brief these socks are not for me.

let them know. send them back.

UPDATE: I did send these socks back to the manufacturers, HJ Hall, they apologised for the fault and said that it was due to an issue with the particular yarn used in the style. As an apology (and because they were waiting on new stock without the faulty yarn) they sent me a pair from their ProTrek technical range, and a pair of lighter weight socks for summer use.

So I still don't like the [original] socks, but the manufacturers are very nice (and the new socks are doing well so far).

Ben Fogle, the same Ben Fogle that was on that Scottish Island progamme 10 years ago? Sheesh! So this bloke's endorsing his own socks now? If so he's not got off to a good start with these by the sounds of things.

Thanks for the review. Glad you got something back from the manufacturer.

Just bought myself some heavy duty socks. 2 pairs for €12 which is very pricey for me, but I figured what the hell. I haven't given them a test yet. SWMBO just came back from the UK with a small present, a pair of wellington socks. Now I like my socks to reach my knees, these stop halfway up my shin but they're soft. Can't see them lasting long and not bunching up around my toes when I'm out walking in wellies though. We'll see.

I thought you were going to say one of your pet hates was products endorsed by so-called celebritys. It's one of mine! Grrrrr

To prevent socks heading toe-wards try wellie boot liners. They're a sort of oversock much like those little socks you wear in the summer with trainers that make it look as though you're not wearing socks. (know the type?) Anyway I have a pair of these and they've solved the creeping socks problem for me and wearing wellies on the dog walk is a requirement at this time of year, not an option.

I did try stapling the socks to my shins but they got sore after a while. Lucky I'm a masochist eh?

Sorry for the thread hi-jack ed_hopper.
