Anyone know what the difference is between the British Army "Olive Green Jungle Basha" and the British Army "Camo shelter sheet"?
I had the Camo shelter sheet but i need a replacement (it's now a permanent awning on my fathers landrover  ) and im wondering what the Jungle Basha is like.

The camo shelter sheet was £30 and the jungle basha is £20 ,or is it worth spending £50 :( on an Australian Hootchie/ from Mears
Cheers
rb

The camoflage basha is what the army replaced the poncho with, the jungle one is a lighter version of it but in green. Both work equally well and to be honest at the price both are excellent value for money.

The woodlore hootchie is a much heavier weight material with a heavier weight price tag, but it will still keep you dry.

Before you decide, outdoorcode can give you a quote for a genuine Aussie Hootchi, I'm waiting on a delivery from him at the moment, should be here by the weekend I believe.
Best Regards,
:)

Im not sure that i'd want anything heavier or bulkier than the DPM basha im replacing.
When Mears rolls up the Hootchieon his DVD's it looks smaller than the DPM Basha.

Are the green jungle basha's as strong as the DPM basha ? ,i used the DPM in some pretty rough weather and it never let me down.

RB I never used the issue DPM basha but the jungle one packs down really small - its a little stiff and the material feels crisp packy but I used its down to minus 15 in some crappy weather and it was fine. I'd say about a third smaller than the Woodlore Aussie one.

Currently I am using the Kathmandu Hootchie too, these are lighter, rip stop, pack even smaller and have more loops around the sides so can be put up in more varied ways. Have used it in really bad weather yet but I have used it in rain ect and it was fine.

I have the kathmandu too. brilliant and it fits in a water bottle pouch with all the cords and pegs etc.
As an aside can anyone tell me how to tie the knot on "guy ropes" that slides to adjust tension, not the Prusic for the ridge, but the one on the side lines to the ties. Sure it was in RM's book but I flogged it

Are the Kathmandu tarps better quality than the Hennessey tarps ?
I have 2 Hennessey tarps and they are fine but quite light weight and i don't know that I'd want to really test them in severe weather.

I have had the Hennessy flys and reckon that the Kathmandu ones are better made. Even though they are esssentially the same material, the finishing around the edges and the reinforcement at the loops and points of stress are far better. I have used mine in a good prolonged downpour and a moderate (force 5) wind and reckon that decently set up it would cope with a good bit more.

Hi RB,

There is also the Kathmandu Hootchie/Basha which seems a lot lighter than most (LARGE; 2.5mts. x 1.8mts. Weight; 370g/13oz).

Grez..

I have the 3mts x 1.8mts basha. Fantastic bit of kit. Will take some photos of it later and try and get them up.

The advantage of the Kathmandu extended length bashas is that you can peg one end to the ground closing it off completely.

Here are a couple of photos that Kathmandu sent me to illustrate (this is the 3mts x 2.5mts it works on my one but the end is slightly lower):-

They also modify them on request. I had two extra loops added along the ridge line (which they did free of charge ...... nice guys! :D ).

Looks like good kit BM.
Do they have loops along the centre (ridge) ?
I was looking at the Kathmandu site and they will make modifications to suit so i was thinking about a few extra loops so it could also be hung like a Hennessy tarp.

They only have one loop in the center of the sheet but I had two extras added so it now has 3 (5 if you count the ones on the edge) along the ridge looks something like this (plan view):-

....... oh and for anyone else thats interested Kathmandu have also started producing nylon "wig-wams":-

Not sure how much they are though.
