one may be saved but the other, no.

Thats interesting. one could make a good small knife, but the other Im doubtful of.

anyone know about the steel used for these things?

When I saw the title of this I thought it was going to be a thread about injuries to peoples throat o_O

Still, its a shame that such nice blades have been damaged, but to what extent? Is there any chance of simply cutting the blade down (either towards the handle or into the actual blade) a bit so they can still perform their tasks? If you could post the pictures up it would be very useful, we could have a look at what you could do about it =]

the top one has scales made from some very dark wood (ebony?) which could be used on a SAK, say
