Axe Sheath

While my knife sheath is drying I thought I'd try making an axe sheath for my new axe - a Fiskars hatchet. Got it just for doing a few bits around the garden so didn't really need a Gransfors!

I started with a paper cutout to get the size about right:

And then marked it onto the leather:

Then I did the same for the welt and the fastening piece:

And cut them out:

The welt is currently being glued to the sheath. I'll update the thread as progress is made

I trimmed the fastening piece a bit to make it fit better:

And put in a couple of notches to hold onto the axe head nicely:

I then sewed on the fastening piece:

Not sure what to use on the other side though. Some sort of popper? I haven't got the tool to do that though :S
Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can get large sew-on poppers at haberdashery shops/stalls. I had a few I saved from a charity shop thing, sadly all gone now

I went with the button idea seeing as how I've got a few laying around.
Started with drilling the holes for the button:

And then sewed it on:

I used the thread from stitching to make a plait so it's nice and strong to hold the button:

The axe was a little bit loose inside the sheath so I added a wedge at the bottom:

I then sanded the edge so it's nice and smooth and voila:

Good job mate, i'll get Fox to read this as she needs a sheath for her new axe ( i lost the original rubber bung )
