I have found some wood, which I think is Ash, but I'm not sure.
The tree was already cut, so I can't look at the branches.
I want to make an axe handle out of it.

Hard to tell, looks a bit like it but then it also looks like a young oak as well.

Personally I'm tending more towards it being oak

The grain structure doesn't look like ash. The rings are too small indicating a slower growing tree. Oak as Steve says is a good possibility.
What is the diameter of it? A bit of scale would help :)

It's about 55 cm long(21.7 inches) and the diameter is about 24 cm(9.4 inches).
The tree stump was turning red and branches on the ground looked like ash.

If it is oak it should be pretty heavy. Ash less so. Grab a mag glass and take a look at the late wood. If its ash the late wood is dark and the early is light and full of little holes.
Turning red or orange after being cut points towards alder.

Hard to say but looking at the bark I'd say it was ash. Not deeply fissured enough for oak. Something about the colour too. Difficult to be sure from the pics though.

Most of the board bows over the in US are made from red oak. Nice find. Definitely an oak with that leaf pattern.
