Thinking of getting one. Main purpose stick in ruck sack and wear about camp when it’s chilly or early mornings.
They worth the space ? Sound nice and toasty though not water proof

I've not seen the the softshell but the Buffalo style which with windproof exterior and fleece interior is most excellent.

Cheap, hard-wearing, semi sacrificial if going on a casualty or loaned to a friend and well designed and featured.

Wondering if we may have different thoughts on what is meant by Soft shell which I would agree could cover a large broad spectrum.

Do you mean something like this ? or more tailored and sporty??

I've got the older 2-sided version of that with no hood, plus the trousers - I like them, they pack into small stuff sacks and are warm on, and weigh nowt.
Not as good as down I suppose, but a good imitation at a much more affordable price, and no problems with them getting wet.

If it helps with your search, they are referred to as a ‘Softie’ which is how they’re usually listed.

They are brilliant if in good condition. My preference was a Buffalo but the softies are good, if a bit bulky.

There are lighter weight and generally better quality options available for a similar increase in price tag, but in the £20-40 bracket you can’t go wrong with these.
