I want a belt sheath for my laplander but am not up to making it myself yet. I have a basic idea in mind but need to find someone with the skill. Can anyone suggest anyone who might be open to such a commission?

rapid boy made me a really lovely sheath (for my north star  ) and from what i have seen on british blades his skills have only improved in the short time since he started making them.. i would suggest you contact him.

You can try PM, ESpy (Pete) I've seen some of his work and its defiantely impressive. He'll be away for a couple of weeks so don't panic if you don't get an immediate response.

I have heard that Durex are pretty good, although I do not use them myself (thats why I have three kids), they do come recommended. :) :p :)

I must admit that I do like the look of Rapidboy's work.

Sorry to pinch your thread Marts but whilst we're on the subject of sheaths, which leather is best to use and any idea where I could get a decent set of instructions on making my own?

rb did a tutorial here on making sheaths.

You can use everything from 2.5mm thickness upto 5mm depending on the knife, smaller lighter blades like the Lauri PT you can use 2.5mm and the likes of the woodlores and Fallknivens you are better of using 4mm. Generally we use vegetable tanned leather.

A lot off people use Le Prevo for buying leather as the service is very good and they are always very helpfull on projects. If you do, you will find that the sizes of leather that they are talking about are generally quite large.

You can also buy leather from Brisa who sell smaller pieces, but are a little more expensive. I hope this is of use :)

I wanted a leather sheath for my Mora as I didn't like the green plastic one that came with it.
I used an old scaffolding belt of mine (Draper £6.00 new) and simply stitched it with some thread out of our family sewing box and then plastered it with PVA over the stitching.
It might not look as professional as one made by a 'pro' but I know it's mine!
interestingly enough when I cut the buckle off with some pliers the loop left was the perfect size for my firesteel.

Yup, Rapidboy does indeed make excellent sheaths. My Packpal now lives in one of them and its made to a very high standard.

if you type in bushcraft or Ray Mears on ebay it pulls up loads of junk but there is a bloke who makes possibles pouches, knife sheaths and is currently advertising a Laplander sheath. All work looks very good (i'm not advertising for him). He says that he will make almost anything and uses bridal leather as his material.

I shouldn't bite, but... :D Is it white?

I prefer to use veg tan in the 3.5mm range - depends what I'm doing, but that is a good compromise between flexibility & strength. I'll sandwich thinner leathers together if I'm doing anything with inlays, for example.

I was wondering why you ask if its white?

Does it make a differance?

:)
