ok guys try this one........

3 lads walking past Comets and they see a radio in the window for £30 that they like the look of and decide to buy.

they approach the salesman and say, we'd like to buy that radio for £30 please, and each lad hads over £10.....3 x £10 = £30

the salesman comes back with the radio and says...lads, it's your lucky day, the radio is in the sale, it's £25.

the salesman has the change, 5 x £1 coins in his hand and says.....here's £1 back to each of you and because i told you about the sale, i'm going to keep the last £2.

So.....if each lad handed over £10 and got £1 change, they each spent £9......3 x £9 = £27 and the £2 that the salesman kept = £29.....

where did the other pound go ?

No, they each spent £9 (£27) which pays for the radio at £25 plus the £2 to the salesman = £27, The salesmans £2 is part of the £27. You're adding the salesmans fee twice in the last sentence.

Radio..£25 Plus the Salesmans fee £2..... That equals £27. Three times £9 is £27. You can't add the salesmans fee on again to make it £29.

ok, here we go......

£30 handed over ( 3 x £10 )

radio cost £25

£5 change

£1 back to each lad means they spent £9 ( £1 change from £10 each )

3 x £9 = £27

plus the £2 that the salesman kept ( left over from the £5)

so.....£27 + £2 = £29

Nooooooo!!!!!

They paid £30 and got £3 back, plus the £2 that went to the salesman. That's £30!!!!!

So they each paid £9 which totals £27. That covers £25 for the radio and £2 for the salesperson. There is no amount of £29 unless you add the Salesmans fee twice while ignoring the £3 refund. No missing pound.

£25 Radio
£2 salesman
£3 change

That equals £30. All present and correct.

You are spot on Jon.

Lets ignore the £1x3 - it was given and returned so does not figure.

Therefore three blokes gave £9 each - £27.

£25 in the till, £2 to the salesman.

Simple.
