Another evilbay gone mad!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Tempted to go off on a rant, that I am aware of Ray doesn't sell sheaths for the frost (not leather ones anyway).

On his site he currently advertises the clipper and not the knife pictured.

So if they paid £5 for the knife, £5 on the firesteel and £6 on the materials for the sheath whoever it is will be making a corking profit.

A bit devil's advocate and this isn't my auction, but what's the problem? It states mora knife, firesteel, RM style sheath. There's no false advertising, he doesn't say it's a woodlore. Maybe using the RM name to get peope to look at the item is a bit out of order. If I was RM I suppose I might be a bit peeved at people saying things are RM style....

..but you all seem to be most upset that various numpties have bid it up to nearly £90. Surely that's their look-out? Darwinism in action. If it was £15 would it be OK?

I have no problem with that sort of auction, at the end of the day it doesnt make out its anything other than what it is, and if the bidders cant see it then its tough

Pedant hat on, but this is what it says:

Here is your chance to win a Mora of Sweden Knife (like what Ray Mears has in his latest bushcraft series) with a Ray mears Sheath and a Swedish Firesteel

The word style is often put in listings to stop ebay pulling an advert - the assumption is that they won't read through the text of every advert, just the heading.

Yeah, fair enough, I did notice him drop "style" inbetween title and description. That said though, it seems perfectly clear to everyone posting in this thread exactly what the auction is for.....

Well, yeah, I do get upset about people being ripped off in general. If I have some knowledge of a subject and I notice someone, because of basic innocence or lack of knowledge, being conned then I'm apt to say so. And I like to think that others would do the same for me. Darwinism's got F. All to do with it. It's basic human decency. That and a general hatred of confidence tricksters.

Re-reading this I may sound like i'm having a go at you Scanker. Sorry - I'm not. I just get pee'd off with things like this. I also regularly shout out 'Darwin award' at some of the things I see people doing. :)

I fully agree

None taken. (You have to listen to Steve Wright on Radio 2 to get that). :D

As I'm clumsily trying to point out though, there isn't all that wrong with the description, it's certainly not a trick, con or scam along the lines of when you buy a empty PS2 box and not a PS2, but even in those cases, if you read the auction it's obvious what you're buying.

Ah never mind. I was only playing devil's advocate. It seems more people see your position than mine. IMO it's quite clear it's a mora knife, firesteel and leather sheath in the style of RM. I think you'd agree with that (marts) and the bit you don't like is that he referred to a RM sheath in the description, rather than a RM style sheath. Emphasis on the style.

Now my position is that if the bidder wants a RM knife, sheath or whatever or even a RM style whatever, a reasonable person would look at the RM website. There they'd find a sheath costs £45 and a mora knife £10. He even sells a firestick for a tenner. A grand total of £65. Not sure that the knife would fit the sheath, but hey ho, I'm not buying it.

Caveat emptor. Buyer beware. The bidders are obviously too stupid to be outside on their own, let alone bidding on items on ebay. It's the bidders at fault here, not the seller.

In my opinon. No further correspondence will be entered into.

La la la la la la la la la la la la la.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I'm with Scanker, in this instance it is the buyers who have jacked the price up when it would take minutes to check the validity of that amount. Have no one to blame but themselves.

just because someone doesn't know better, doesn't mean they should be taken advantage of.
Thing is, there are at least two people bidding on that item, the onus is surely on them as the seller didn't set the price.

If it was "Buy It Now" for that price then I'd be inclined to agree it was a con.

Hellz

Edit: Beaten to it

hi hellz,

i agree that it's up to the buyer to research what they're bidding on.
it's certainly not an attempt to try and con someone.

it's the use of the Ray Mears name on ebay auctions that annoys me.

i'm just thinking that someone may be after a Valentines / Birthday pressie for the other half, and the use of that name is giving them a bit of confidence about what they are bidding on.

but as skanker says, buyer beware.

now what did I do with that rusty old mora.. :D

Strewth! - I diddn't intend / expect this thread to get so heated! - I only thought i'd start it to show it is still happening!:o

I have to say I tend to aggree with most the comments though - both the 'it shouldn't be allowed' and the 'well more fool them' camps.

I'm not sitting on the fence I just feel it is your choice to waste money if you want but also don't like the idea of misleeding people.

what a crazy world we live in! - lets all escape to the countryside to get away from it :lmao:

- oh yes thats what we do and why we are here! :D

In some ways I say good luck to the seller, but as fiacha says what if someones other (non bushcrafti) other half is buying it as a surprise! SWMBO quite often gets excited and drags me to stuff in shops or on t'interweb thinking its a good deal, because of RM or bushcraft tag, till I point out the various places the same item can be bought at half the price.
