An oddball challenge

This is a big old crack willow where I was walking today.

Now the question is about the round lumps in the centre...would anyone like to hazard a guess what caused them?

Have they developed from eggs in that crack or is that a snail des res ?

Can anyone remember or even find that thread with the slimey tree picture, I don't think anyone was very sure what it was at the time but this looks promising.

Just shelter in the cold I suspect - but I'm no expert here

I've seen that before, didn't realise it was a rare occurance.
