:D Those are good :D

I am so glad Spring is here and the longer days :) it's been a dreich Winter and I am thoroughly scunnered of it.

The newts are busy in my garden ponds but I haven't seen any frogs this year.
Those look small, the ones I see in the garden (apart from the new hatched ones out in the grass) are about the size of my hand.

JD ? I've just looked at this site
http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/identification.asp#native

and the frogs/toads they show look nothing like the ones I see :dunno:
The frog looks like a leathery brown thing that almost flies as it jumps, and the toad has red spots, sort of, on it's back.
Are these just variations of the native ones, or are they something that shouldn't be here ?

cheers,
M

They are pretty much good examples of the most common colouring in the UK. As far up North as you are, you'll only have the Common frog and Common toad. The common frog has quite a range of colouration from red to bright yellow later in the year (now they are all a squashy brown colour). The Common toad can range from a light leathery tan, to a dark walnut colour even with darker spots on it's back.

Here's a couple I found on Saturday morning whilst out otter tracking.
Note the piece of spraint just in front of them.
