your house!
I've been watching a wasp who I think is living in the space under my kitchen floor, it goes out of an air vent in the morning and returns in the evening. I'm sure there's only one as i have rather alot of time on my hands at the mo and haven't seen any others during my wasp watching session yesturday, my question is if I block the vent will waspy:

A. move on.
B. just find another way in.
C. beat me up:swordfigh
D. am I worrying over nothing.

we live in an MOD house is this something I should report do you think or is it a case of dont bother the wasp and it won't bother us.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

David.

You could spray a nest destrying foam into the hole when she flies in tonight, do it with confidence though or she'll go for option "C"! There might be another entrance but you might be lucky!

MoD housing is notorious for wasp nests (I used to be "in") with a number of mates houses affected. It might not be very active right now, but give it a few months and there'll be many thousands of them - best get rid sooner rather than later when summer bbq's parties etc get affected.

As an aside, if it does get big and you can wait till winter to recover the nest, they make great tinder - being finely processed wood pulp.

Why don't you leave it be and watch the comings and goings? I have two wasps nests around my place and just let them go about their business unless in a place that my liitle girl is likely to disturb.

Thats the problem, The vent is about one foot to the right of our back door which opens onto the patio, if my kids were a little older I would have no worries about leaving it alone, but there only 16 months, walking at speed and interested in everything, perhapse i should use the expanding foam on them, might slow them down abit.

I wouldn't use expanding foam as the vent is there for a reason and it might cause long term damage if you preven air flow. Get some commercial spray, as in such an enclosed area with very few wasps might just wipe out the lot.

you can buy little pills ..........sorry dont know what they are called but you can find them in some pet shops.......light it and put it in the hole.....it only smoulders but it will kill them all ....i used to use them when i wanted the wasp grubs for fishing......cracking bait for chub

I was thinking more along these lines

i would personally catch it and seal it in an old aquarium with one side covered in net curtain, put a few bits of log and other bits and bobs for it to use to build the nest (or better yet remove the current nest and glue it in there and then put her in. then when she is done cut a hole in the mesh and place somewhere out of the way outside, tada, something amazing to watch and no death! but thats just me being me :D

last time i saw something like this i ignored it thinking, hmm must be just taking an interest in the area.
later on that year i had to deal with a sizable wasps nest!
queue suitablely thick clothing and two cans of raid... i took them on thankfully whilst it was raining and managed to fight my way to the nest and turn it over.
left it several hours and came back to some dead but the rest had moved on.

best way to take out a wasps nest is litterally turn it over.

these are all good ideas, but as for turning it over i'd have to either burrow under the wall or lift some flooring as the only access at the mo is through a brick vent with 10 1" holes, perhapse some keyhole sergery, I really like the idea of a flame thrower, anyone watch Al Murrys road to Belin, talked about the invention of the flame thrower as some guy stood on one side of the street looking at an enemy on the other and thinking" I would really like to set that guy on fire, but I throw like a girl" hence the nessecity for a flame thrower was bourne. as for being big rufty tufty, the dam thing is too quick for high port to parry movements.

Here's a pic of the blighter trying to drag my table back to it's lair!
