After using the Bergans Langevann 11ltr Hip pack for two months, I will givea short review....

This is the stock picture, off the Bergans website. Looks pretty, but not very discriptive or helpful. The 11ltrs refers to the size of the main pocket and does not include the exterior pockets. The hip pack is designed for the light hunter, enabling him to carry everything required for a days hunting. I have found that with careful packing, you are able to carry enough equipment to spend a night out, albeit at a small loss in comfort.

Here is my Langevann fully packed for a day trip. With everything in it weighs 7kgs. For those interested, the pack in this picture contains:

The main pocket is 11ltrs. It is a simple large pocket, waterproofed as are all other pockets. With some invention, you can fit a lot of kit inside. The back of the pocket is stiffened with a plastic rod, which keeps the whole pack upright and firm. It is closed via a zipped lid, with YKK zips.

The Langevann comes with an integral game bag, which rolls up neatly into the top lid pocket when not required. Over the last few months I have used it as a small back pack to carry my outer layer, or my Goretex jacket, or camera kit etc.

When fully packed, the pack sits very nicely on the hips. Due to very secure straps, the pack is stable and does not twist when I am walking. It distributes the weight of the pack very well and I barely notice its there.

The back of the pack is thickly padded with a high density foam, which is waterproof. This greatly aids comfort and I have never exprienced rubbing or marks despite wearing the pack for the whole day.

The side of the hip pack has these mesh pockets on each side. They can accomodate a 1ltr Nalgene bottle nested in a tatonka solo cup with ease. In the other pocket I carry my woolen hat and mittens in a waterproof stuff sack.

The lid of the main pocket includes this small pocket which holds the game bag when its not used. If you do use it as extra storage space, there is ample room for your mobile phone, a GPS or small cuts kit. A large baccy tin fits well.

An approx 1.5ltr pocket is on the outer side of the pack. I keep my medical kit, inflatable travel pillow and a mesh foraging bag. It has a water resistant YKK zip, seen here:

On each side of the hip belt, there are these small possibles pouches. They are attached with very strong velcro and can be removed if you wish. They are large enough to carry a large baccy tin, cordage, a bic lighter and my head torch.
The Bergans Langevann is a very robust hip pack. I have found that it is very comfortable, even over long distances and has the advantage over rucksacks by not giving me a sweaty back durng the day. I can carry everything I need for a day out with my son, whether I am fishing, foraging or just meandering. With thought I can even carry enough gear for an overnighter and still sleep well. The pack will suit bushcrafters who dont want to carry a half empty rucksack everytime they are out, or hunters who travel light. It retails at around £70 but you can find it for cheaper if you search around.
