A New Way to Teach Pilots How to Fly: use the control column not the keyboard

I saw this on Pprune and found it amusing

"pilots will not be allowed to switch on the automatic systems until they have learned how to fly the aeroplane."

Interesting. I would have thought that all pilots qualified for CPL with enough flying hour logged would in effect have a good grounding in the type of aircraft they are to pilot or co-pilot. It seems to me like this article suggest that more often than not the people "flying" the aircraft are no more than control watchers which is a little scary if true.
