Isn't a baldric a small metal button for attaching a scabbard to a belt? I remember the wry look on Tony Robinson's face when he explained this on Time Team... :)

Hmmm, I know it as the cross shoulder belt that holds a sword or a knife.
William Wallace made his from the skin he stripped from the man who 'insulted' his wife. From the nape to the heel, it is said.
