Good explanation Stew.

Just to elaborate further, the reason that cutting "downhill" works is that as each fibre is being cut it is supported against that cut by the other fibres underneath it. When cutting "uphill" the fibre being cut isn't supported and under pressure from the blade it will flex into space and tear or catch.

Hope that helps a bit as well.

Thank for the lesson. I saw a vid a few years back where a guy tried to cut through a small tree with his Mora knife. It was a real struggle. He then bent the small tree over and cut down at an angle. I was surprised at how easy it went through.
