58 Patt poncho help

Hi,
I got a 58 patt poncho very cheap off ebay and the inside has what
looks like gold flecks on the inside where it looks like something has
worn away, does anyone know what this could be?
It is still waterproof (tried it in the shower) but just curious.
BTW why does army surplus always smell like army surplus?
And finally a big thanks to all the posters on here as while I don't
post much it seems that most of the things I need to know are
already here

In my experience army surplus does indeed always smell like army surplus
its that mixture of Treated material + Damp + dusty warehouse.
did you get it from tib street perchance? the stuff upstairs is practically sweet smelling compared to whats in the basement, yet all the good stuff is downstairs

The flecks are likely to be the polyurethane coating breaking up and coming off - a common problem - if you've tried it and still say its waterproof - nothing to worry about!

No I didn't get it from tib street very very expensive used ebay £3.50 plus 1.75 postage

gold flecks? possibly metal? perhaps one of the poppers or metal parts are broken? they are a brass type metal(i.e. gold coloured).

The gold flecks are all over the inside of the poncho and don't wash or rub off.
I have also done a more thorough test with an old bin by lining it with the poncho
and filling it water and it doesn't allow the water to come through

Have you tried panning your poncho for gold? If you only paid £3.50 for it, you could make yourself a tidy profit.

i was just on endicotts site and was thinking of getting one of these ponchos...The British Issue "58 Pattern" Poncho are they any good as i am thinking of getting one cheers shogun
