My OH has some survey work to do in the Dales in March/April and July (a c.100 mile round trip) and needs a four wheel drive to access the study sites.

Has anyone any experience of short term 4x4 hire? Ideally it would be a crew cab or tin-back.

Don't know how to put you in touch with his site without it sounding like advertising ... though it's not as it's a directory that's free to view and free to be listed in. Admin can simply wield the red pen if they deem otherwise:-

Macks 4x4 info - www.macks4x4info.com - contains a sizeable category purely devoted to 4x4 hire. If you don't find what you need there Bowlander, you won't find it anywhere!

I have used SHB in the past, and always very impressed. I used to return the vehicles (all low mileage 110s) in a shocking state inside and out, and with a few dings, and no dramas whatsoever.

SHB are coming in at £259 a week, the ones on Macks4x4info are too far unfortunately. Our local 'friendly' garage wants £350 a week for a knackered freelander with road tyres on!

Some of the 'Specialist' 4x4 hire specifiy that the hire car must not be driven off road! Starting to wonder whether buying a cheap Disco might be the way to go?
