Conservation Volunteers at Cuerden Valley Park

Hi all it's been a while since i last posted but here is an update on what's been going on recently at CVPT with our dedicated bunch of local volunteers on the park. Sunday 10th June we relocated our beehive to a more favourable location in one of our nature reserve areas. Sunday 01 July...

    River Cleanup

Hi everyone, Just thought i would post again about our latest Cuerden Valley Park Conservation Volunteer day which we had on Sunday 01 April. Sunday's task was a river clean which we do periodically about 2 or 3 times a year and the CVPT working party turned up in force and split into two...

    Himalayan Balsam

Yea i've been hit in the eye on one or two occasions lol, i believe the stems are certainly edible when boiled but i've never tried it.

    Himalayan Balsam

The plant is not poisnous. I've tried it, well small pieces of stem and leaf and i wasn't impressed. I'ts a very watery plant with a slight earthy taste. The sheep round here avoid it and for the most part so do the cattle, however pigs will munch on it. As for the seeds that's a different...

    Himalayan Balsam

Any of you guys pulling any of this stuff up this year?. I noticed the Balsam seed has already germinated, first seedlings have emerged and it will be back with avengence again this year. We have it here everywhere. Thought i would include a pic of one of our conservation groups from a previous...

    River Revetment

Hi again, hope everyone is ok. I was rostered on at Cuerden Valley Park today and remembered to get a couple of shots of the old Willow revetment we did back in 2007/8. With this one as i recall, we never used thin willow bundles as an inter weave, but much thicker individual wips. All the...

    River Revetment

Thanks John, I did manage to find some pics i took of the harvesting of the Willow for our revetment project. The Willow we selected was growing along the edges of a feeder channel that runs from the river into a well established pond but which has no clay bottom. Without the feeder channel...

    Deer in my Garden

some nice pics there! Wish i had Deer in my garden too,. One of the local farmers here had a young fallow buck in his field during 2010 with his small herd of cattle. Whenever he moved the herd onto fresh grazing this lil buck would follow them and he became very popular with the locals. As...

    River Revetment

I'm going to post one here next time i'm up there (will remember to take my camera), the revetment we did a few years ago further along the river. It's amaizing how successful it's been. One of the problems we have from a safety point is when the level of bank erosion begins to approach...

    River Revetment

To be honest i don't really know, there are many varieties of Willow here, i know we have predominantly black willow and bay willow in the park, also some crack willow, i'm not an expert on trees as such but we do avoid using it as firewood because the head ranger insists it is not a hard wood...

    Poisonous Fruits

Laburnham is toxic yes i believe all parts of the tree contain the alkaloid Cytisine. I've tried Yew berries and was suprised to find them intensly sweet. While reading through the threads here it reminded me of what i've heard regarding Himalayan Balsam. We have a severe problem with it here...

    River Revetment

We have a variety of Salix species growing around the park in various locations, mostly black willow with some bay willow, and as part of the parks woodland management program we regularly thin alot of it out. Some of the remaining stumps are treated with Glyphosate solution to kill it off...

The Ultimate "What is this Fungi?" thread.

Struggling with the ID on this one now for some time from my collection. I saw it growing on a dead tree stump at my local park and i've only got it listed as a polypor type?. Would be great if anyone here could help me out.

    River Revetment

The waterflow is genrally very good. The river is the river Lostock, and the valley is a post glacial feature. The river is running through very loose superficial glacial deposits of sands gravels and clays, and is erroding away in places at an alarming rate. I will try and get a pic sometime of...
