So, gaiters. Who likes 'em and who doesn't?

I use THESE. I've always used cheap gaiters to keep mud and wet out but hate the slipping down feeling. These are awesome, when they get wet they suck to your legs and seal up surprisingly tightly. Good for a quickstep through a river!

    Knives in schools.

As much as I hate to wade into an argument (Ha, I love it) I think this sentence pretty much clears it up. School policy may vary but the letter of the law says UNDER 3 AND FOLDING IS A-OK. Let's take a little bit of section 139a (we don't need much): "(1) Any person who has an article to which...

Newbie Question, what exactly is a "Bushcraft" knife?

I guess the definition that covers most £100+ Woodlore/Ray Mears type knives that are so popular is as follows: 3mm+ thick carbon steel blade Scandi single bevel edge Full tang Then they usually come with wooden handles and leather sheaths, a matter of personal preference and some aesthetic...

Kit bag, work bag, man bag thing needed!

I use my Karrimor SF Predator Patrol 45 all the time. You can zip up the sides and it's small enough to take a laptop and jumper, excellent days in the city. Couple of pockets on top for keys etc. If that's not enough space you can unzip it to go to 45 litre. Also takes side pouches and there is...

    Plywood boat.

I made a 15'10" canoe as cheaply and quickly as possible. 6mm should be more than sufficent over a wooden frame, mine is 6mm. Exterior ply is also fine if kept away from the water with resin and paint. I also used poly resin instead of epoxy to keep costs low. In freshwater I don't think this...

best all round tool for woodland cutting back

+1 for a slasher. Mines only single sided but with a good edge it can do serious damage because of the length. Make sure bystanders stand well back.

I found a cleaver in the back of the shed

My granddad's shed is a veritable treasure trove. I found tools that I never knew existed. This has been used to split logs and the top is flattened from being beaten on. I've been sort of debating that really, I've taken one side back to a tidy rustic but there is still some pitting. Is a...

I found a cleaver in the back of the shed

So I found this badboy in the back of the shed: Started cleaning up the blade today, a good treatment with the file brought the blade back to a rough edge but at least one free of dings. Been working for a little while on the faces now but it's become clear that the handle needs to come off...

Sun Protection - do you bovver?

I wish I had a skin cancer patient with me on Army Cadet Camps. The kids treat putting on suncream like a form of torture and I always get flak from them as I stand there and dole out portions for everyone.

That is crazy awesome. Makes me sad to be getting rid of my 110.

    NI Patrol pack modifications?

I've seen them modded with some extra straps (I believe from body armour) that allow you to clip the lid shut by the top loops rather than the main clips. This means you can crank it down tighter when not crammed full. I was going to try it but mine got pinched out of the back of the car.

    Lightweight sleeping bag for fatties

These bags are awesome for warmth and the centre zip and inside pockets are amazing. It is however the approximate size and weight of a baby elephant. I carried one for 3 years and loved it, now I'm going to spend some money on something a bit smaller and lighter.

    Flying with Knives

Thanks guys, good info all round. The only reference I was able to find on NZ customs was to not bringing in "Firearms or weapons". Seems a bit vague on the "weapons" front. I'm travelling on a 12 month working holiday visa for those that asked.

    Flying with Knives

In the next month I am planning to jump aboard a jet and make my merry way to New Zealand for a 12 month working holiday. Being the tight fisted bushcrafter that I am I have little desire to purchase a new knife or axe when I arrive. Is it possible to stick them in checked luggage and take them...
