    Buck Vanguard Sheath

What type of sheath did your knife come with Mike? I have a couple of Vanguards that came with leather sheaths and to be honest I liked them so much I ended up copying them when I made my own sheath for one of the knives. There is a very slim ( I mean very slim) chance that I still have the...

    Punk wood tinder help please

The only punky wood I use is the dry, dead pith from within the trunk of a willow tree. It's often easy to get at as the trees split themselves open with age, and stays dry because it's protected from the weather in there. It works great as a coal extender but is usually all but impossible to...

    Gransfors splitting maul

I wish I could rep you for that mate. That's one of the best explanations of the reasoning behind the purchease of a quality tool that I've ever seen on-line. We think alike ;)

    What fish, and When?

I'll revive this with a little of what I know on the matter as a lifelong angler and once time Head Bailiff for a fishing club.. Virtually any freshwater (coarse) fish, if not all, can be eaten.... if you're hungry enough ;) There are obviously some that are far better eating than others...

    Better match management

You could dry everything out in front of the fire ! :) No, hang on, there's a subtle flaw in that plan isn't there ? :lmao:

    Metal satmps.

It's actually Stuart M's father in-law who makes the stamps. He can do them hardened (for stamping steel, i.e. knives before heat treat, or not so hardened and just perfect for stamping leather. He made me one for my leatherwork in the pattern of my avatar above and it's a beauty...

I spoke with Richard Starkie of StarkieSharp this morning and ordered a few things for myself (Moot left me short of supplies  ) The StarkieSharp website is down temporarily at the moment, but will hopefully be up and running again in short order. In the meantime, Mr Starkie can be...

    Edge finishing leather

Hi Mark, I find it best to sand the edges of any areas of multiple thicknesses of leather and to round off the corners of both multi layered sections and single layered sections with an edging tool (usually a #2 or a #3). Once I have them sanded down to about 800 grit wet-n-dry I...

Black Squirrels! not over cooked ones

No mate, but not too far up the road from you at Luton. I was on the Duke of Bedfords Estate at Woburn Abbey.

Black Squirrels! not over cooked ones

As the article suggests, these seem to be just a natural variation of the ordinary grey squirrel. Nothing new there, other than the numbers that seem to now be in evidence, perhaps due to the females prefering the black males as partners resulting in higher numbers of black squirrel births...

    Sharpening query with a twist?

Aha ! *small dim lightbulb begins to glimmer in the dark recesses of my long forgotten, and oft unused brain* I can't see that the blade would need to be curved in the second plane as well as bent into a hook shape. As long as it's not too wide you'll be able to get it in, and around the bowl...

    Old Town Canoe F/S

Sorry guys, should have up-dated my post earlier. CANOE, AND ALL SUNDRY ITEMS SOLD Apparently the system let me post the thread in the classifieds when it shouldn't have done, so now it won't let me edit my original post to show it as 'Sold'.

    Sharpening query with a twist?

I don't quite undrstand the problem here Ogri. (Maybe I'm not alone and this is why I'm the first to reply) If you're making the blades from scratch, you need to grind in the bevels prior to bending the thing into the required curve, THEN heat treat. Sharpening should then be a relatively...

    Old Town Canoe F/S

CANOE, AND ALL SUNDRY ITEMS SOLD SWMBO and I don't ever seem to get the time to use this these days we are looking to sell our canoe. It's an Old Town Discovery 169. The bow and stern have been strengthened to prevent damage to the main hull. This was done purely as a preventative measure...

    Christmas/New Years Meet at Swyns 5 & 6 Jan 2008

I'm hoping that I can make it down for the day on the Sunday if that's OK ? 'Hoping' coz I've got to see how much kitchen I've got ripped out and re-built the previous day before I'll know whether I can make it. The sacrifices we have to make just to get something as insignificant as an Aga...

    Great balls of fire !

I recently bought some cheap ping-pong balls to cut in half (it's a long story but those of you who frequent the BB forum will understand ;) ) I had them delivered to the office and just had to try turning them into halves before my night shift was over :o Outside the office we have a spot on...

    "Bruiser Knife"

Are you sure you're feeling OK Red ? First you "come over all 'Wayland' on us" and now your considering getting a convexed knife ? :lmao: I'd recommend the Fallkniven A2 as I have one and love the thing. It's a little bigger than you are talking about, but I've not had it 'baulk' at a job...
