First aid + kit advice for traveling the world please

As others have said... work out what "might" happen and prepare for it. The size of your FAK will need to be relative to how far off the beaten track you intend to go. Replacing stuff you have used is fairly straightforward, just walk into any local pharmacy and even if you dont speak the...

    first folding saw?

Yeah they do but mainly because you can attach them to a ten foot pole and it saves you climbing the tree to use a bow saw. If you are having to hunt that high up for firewood you are camping in the wrong spot :p

    first folding saw?

Just to add my 2p worth and agree with those who have suggested a bow saw. Weight wise I dont think there is a lot in it, though they are a bit bulkier, still strap to the outside of your pack and it is no biggie. Replacement blades for a bow saw are a couple of quid, buying a new Silky might...

How best to store/keep an axe?

Not a great fan of WD40 for long term store, it evaporates completely and leaves no oil behind. WD40 was invented to remove water (the WD stands for water displacement) Grand for hosing tools down with when you bring them in out the wet but once the water has been dispersed , slap some oil on...

    Begleri !

So I am stopping smoking and looking for something to fidget with While trawling for greek worry beads, I stumbed on begleri a very simple variation with only 2 beads. What is the point in that you ask ? Watch and learn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smpJ2qOTK_s Collecting beads not being...

    Backpacking Tips.

Most important advice is to talk to people. Stations, hostels, cafes, if you see a bunch of people lugging backpacks ask them where they have been or where they are going. Chances are they will be able to give you some really sound tips, and you them :) There are no strangers in life, just...

    Campervan living

Can be pricey but it might be worth investing in heating. Off the top of my head Webasto and Eberspaecher are 2 companies that make them. Most continental HGVs have them fitted, not sure about UK trucks. I guess you could try for second hand ones from the scrappy? They run off the fuel in the...

Help with a tree in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary please.

To be honest they struck me more as mimosa/acacia leaves than needles. Certainly lacking any of the stiff waxy layers that make things like pine needles so umm needly (? is that even a word?) If I ever go back I shall take some real pics , but hopefully - being a hospital car park and all that...

Help with a tree in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary please.

Myo , yes just been comparing the 2 pages again http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metasequoia_glyptostroboides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxodium_distichum I think the Bald Cypress has leaves coming out the stems spirally Which doesn't quite match my memory of the trees. Dawn Redwood it is...

Help with a tree in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary please.

Fraid not, I did have a good look at it and assumed the leaf was distinctive enough to give me a good go at searching a decent tree ID site for it. Unfortunately I cant seem to find a "good" tree ID page. Pretty sure it is not native though :D

Help with a tree in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary please.

More than a few of these dotted around car park D while waiting for a friend visiting a relative. About 3 metres tall upright trees. Didnt notice leaves folding when touched or presence of thorns. Took a leaf thinking I could look it up and ended up more than a bit stumped really. As far as I...

    Lethal Beavers in Belarus

Can only add that pointing a camera at a wild animal you have cornered is an act of staggering stupidity. Hard wired into our makeup is the little fact that if something is staring really hard at you it is probably about to attack. And to an already nervous critter a camera lens looks pretty...

    Google earth help.

Try this site, http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ It lets you save routes and share them , for plotting the route just use the "straight lines" otherwise it tries to follow the nearest road which isnt always ideal ;)

    What dog food?

Oats are not a bad food for dogs, not a complete food probably but enough to keep him going for a couple of days. Specially if you can add in a few scraps , meat fish or egg. I would go for rolled oats and pour hot water on them then let it cool before feeding. http://canigivemydog.com/oatmeal

    Berry recognition help

There is a nice cherry laurel near me here which had me puzzled for a bit, I opened one of the fruits and it was very plum like with a small plum stone in the middle surrounded by a good layer of soft fruit. Thanks for that linky Gibbsy, what it doesnt show well is the size of the leaves, big...
