    Pear-Shaped Tarping

Thanks for sharing. Happy for the thread to expand to 'that time it (nearly) all went wrong-shaped' (can one self troll?!?). Anyway, I'll try not to practice tarpology with the spouse and dogs again... Gaudette, lets hear it! Treadlightly: that's a lovely part of the world, and I've been...

    Pear-Shaped Tarping

Thanks for the interest. Don't want to say too much about the site as we really shouldn't have been there. Didn't realise until too late that it was actually a SSSI. Perhaps we should have guessed from the unusual vegetation etc, but hey, it was dark and raining. There probably is a calamity...

    Pear-Shaped Tarping

A wee story of our recent lightweight camping expedition with a few pear shapes thrown in… Thought I’d practice some tarpology with wife and dogs. Near Buxton seemed a good idea as I also wanted some spring water to make some mead with (St Anne’s well . Its warm too). Picked a spot from the...

    Knife Handle Wood

Try soaking the green wood in very salty water for a week or so (depending on how thick the wood is) and then rinse the salt off. I've used this method for some hawthorne spoons and it works fine. Oh, and remember to give your tools a good clean and oil after using them or the salt will assist...

    Antler Plectrum

Great. That's good to hear. Thought I'd wasted a nice piece of antler there. Hoping it'll be nicer to use than plastic (or coin!). Cheers!

    Antler Plectrum

Hi Folks, Today I made a guitar plectrum out of red deer antler as a gift. But not being a guitar player I'm now wondering if it might be too stiff. How might it be made more flexible or less brittle? Thanks for your thoughts.

    tinned butter

Alternatively, pack the butter in an oak tub and burry in your local bog. That should keep it fresh for a few thousand years... I kid ye not. Just google 'Bog Butter'.

    Tobacco substitute

A substitute for tobacco in the wild is a home grown domesticated variety. Wouldn't recommend it, though. Too addictive.

The Future of Forests and Woods

Sorry if this has already been posted, but for your info... Quoting FSB: "Everyone interested in forests and woods is invited to contribute to a 'public conversation' launched by the Independent Panel on Forestry, to help it fully understand the wide range of views, interests and expertise...

    honey cuts

Not sure. But consider this: for honey to be sold it has to meet trading standards which include, if I remember rightly, maximum levels for water and sucrose. It should be 'honey' then and 'ok' for wound treatment. But many honeys for sale in supermarkets contain "a mix of EU and non EU honey"...

    honey cuts

I also heard that article on Radio 4. A listener had asked about the antibacterial properties of honey and wether it had been used in wound dressings on the battle field: It has. Another of the antibacterial mechanisms they mentioned is the slow release of hydrogen peroxide, formed from...

    Oldest Arrowheads Discovered So Far

Arrowheads recently unearthed in a cave near Durban, South Africa, have been dated as the earliest evidence of bows and arrows to 64,000 years ago. A 'forensic' examination of them found plant resin glues and even blood and bone remains... see...
