Another Heretic here, based on current medical advice to avoid sugar/insulin spikes. Went shopping yesterday and found Condensed just tipped over 50% sugars.
Nice tho' it is, I bought Evap.

It makes decent Dutch oven ice cream mixed with double cream, you don't get the icy crystals. Has a unique stickiness all of it's own too.

Ah! Perhaps it could make a good bushcraft flypaper. There had to be some use for it.

Sometimes the most mundane things stick in memories, and Conny onny is one of them for me...
Back in the early 1960's I attended a course that on passing would lead to me being rated as Able Seaman in Merchant ships. There was an examination at the end of the course which was at St Katherine's Dock in London, then a working Dock, now the haunt of the rich and fashionable. The old Board of Trade qualification was overseen by retired Master Mariners and apart from Seamanship, splicing, ship's lights etc one of my final questions was..
Name the contents of the survival ration lockers in a ship's Life Boat..

per person... 16 ozs of Barley sugar.
16 ozs of Hard Biscuit
and
16 ozs of sweetened condensed milk..
plus 3/4 gallon of fresh water

Correct..and I passed.

While I wouldn’t give rucksack room to the nasty stuff, I do remember seeing it in tubes.
Is that still available?
Very convenient I would have thought.

(Off topic - it’s how I carry passata, garlic or ginger into camp - in tubes.)

Edited to add:
I’ve found condensed milk in squeezey bottles but that’s not the same as a metal tube because it lets air back into the container.

Lovely stuff....makes brilliant tablet too

I got a load of tins on offer, made up several kilos of tablet
was very tasty at first, but kept it in the shed chest freezer which was also full of bags of brussel sprouts

so ended up with a huge amount of brussel sprout flavoured tablet.....

Instead of giving up on trying multiple part-filled little tubs that split in the bag, and you cannot read the label in the dark. That also take up a surprising amount of space in the rucksack..

Well after reading this a while ago I spotted a tin of Carnation in the shop and decided to give it a go in my coffee and was pleasantly surprised. Very nice indeed.

I wish I could find the tubes, non to be had anywhere near me. Even tried the polish section in tesco.
Oh well, I'll have to stick with the nasty milk powder when out. I do rather love hot chocolate made with evaporated milk. It used to be an evening snack, along with a fried strawberry jam sandwich. Probably why I have a sweet tooth and several fillings, though I much prefer savoury nowadays.

Try Nido, more expesnive but tastes better, shorter shelf life....

if you buy 2kg powdered milk ( not nido) online its cheaper than buying fresh milk with todays expensive milk prices...

might have been in this thread, but france apparently still has condensed milk tubes in their shops
