I'm wondering how many people use a camera these days with phones taking over a lot of the roll cameras have traditionally been used for. I tend to use my phone more now than a camera, of which I have a couple of reasonably nice ones, but they're hardly getting used, I think because they're no where near as easy or convenient to use.

How about you? Phone or Camera, what's your reasoning?

At present and because i can't get out and about i use my phone as its just convenient, but when i was mobile and out and about all the time i used a small compact camera as i just found it less hassle, from time to time i would take my digital SLR with me, but that was normally when i was on a mission to photograph one particular subject, so would take telephoto or macro lenses depending on what i was doing.

I mainly used a Nikon Coolpix and it sat in a trouser or coat pocket nicely (and it had a handy wrist strap), just pressed the button to turn it on, use the zoom lever to zoom in and out, point and shoot or record video, i had all my settings saved on it so no messing around trying to find the right setting, whereas the phone i had to unlock it, open the app, hope the settings were right, fiddle around with gestures to zoom in etc, which often resulted in lots of other gestures and under the breath mutterings towards the thing.

Im also one of those strange people that uses a phone as phone, even now my phone has very few apps on it and when i'm able to get out and about again, the Nikon will come out with me again.

Phone - nearly always - Convenience , ease of sharing and uploading photos and being able to twiddle and play with filters and colours.

Do have a digi proper camera in my car in case the aliens land and I can scoop a Pulitizer or sell photos to a tabloid but Phones... love them , hate them... can't knock them for multi functionality.

Depends entirely on what I'm doing. I'm happy to use my phone camera for quick photos whilst out and about. However, most of my photography these days is wildlife recording where I either need a good macro or a long telephoto lens. For that I either use my pocket Olympus TG5 which has an excellent macro capability or my DSLR with a 400mm zoom lens.

Horses for courses :)

Both. We both have high end phones with excellent cameras but for writing articles, an SLR on a tripod with lenses from fish eye to telephoto are better. Go Pros, Ring Cameras, phones SLRs and specialist coop cameras all come in to play for YouTube.

We had cameras but I'm not sure where they are now. I just got a pixel 9 for the camera and software for it. Wanted a pro but baulked at the extra cost.

I must admit I always think I want a mirror less system every so often but I just can't spare the cash on a pure want without a need. My current and last phone produce results good enough for my needs

I have a couple of digital cameras and do take quite a few photos of things that appeal. There’s plenty to look at in our corner of Somerset. I use an iPhone too but for pics for day to day stuff including Tripadvisor reviews, videos and OCR/document scanning. Horses for courses.

All pics you see on here from me are iPhone 12 Mini. I have SANDMARC lenses for macro and telephoto that screw into a thread on a bumper case by the same company.

I’m very instinctive and spontaneous when I take pics, and despite once owning a tiny and brilliant Canon S95, I never had it pocket ready to pull out and go. Even the lenses I have are a bit clunky, I have to get them out, take caps off, screw them in etc but I’m loving the results such as the pics in the Spring thread, seeing right inside flowers.

What tends to happen with me is that I revert to simplicity, hence the phone camera, I've a couple of Sony's, one with a variety of lenses and they're great, but I never process the images and find it harder to get good shots, although I know it's capable of far superior shots. I know this is down to me, the user, but it seems to be the reality.
Saying that, I bet there are some cameras now that are as easy to use as a phone, mine might be a bit dated.

Last camera i bought was a Pentax MX back in the 90’s, still got it, still love it, haven’t used it in 20 plus years now.
I use my phone.

Ha, when people do.a "Pocket Dump" on here its like smartphones don't exist and everyone has a bit of reindeer hide to display a posh watch and so on, on.
Usually on a bit of wood, in their garden.

I've just got a not particularly smart, smartphone. It takes pix.

Oh and my watch is a Casio, just for the record like.

Phone these days Tony. Phone cams have caught up a lot with proper cameras, and its much easier to upload pics from a phone. I need to plug my camera into my PC via a cable. Even though the camera can potentially take better pics, i'm not savvy enough to make use of it.

I expect Gary (Wayland) swings the other way, but he knows his stuff, and frankly, i, and most folk do not.

Wonderfully there is not a single pic on a bit of reindeer hide or posh bit of wood, or in a garden. :D
