    woodsmoke

I have completed two Woodsmoke courses. [Woodlander and Nomad] My wife and I are signed up for this year's Coastal Forager up in Scotland. I have done courses with other groups and enjoyed them immensely, but rate Ben & Lisa's team to be in the top tier. [BTW, I have nothing to do with their...

    Hilleberg tent worth the price?

I can highly recommend the Hilleberg Nallo GT. Very portable and very strong. My wife and I have hiked in the Pyrenees with this tent and it has weathered amazing storms [read: gales, hail, lightning] with no ill effects. Vince

4x4's to pay £1800pa road tax...

I think you need to give them full credit on both fronts.

4x4's to pay £1800pa road tax...

That sums up the government's rather cynical thinking in a nutshell. The more logical carbon weening incentives/strategies mooted by several members in this thread are potentially vote losing wisdom. Morally, the more pertinent question we should all be asking ourselves is: "what I am I...

    Woodsmoke Woodlander

The Woodlander is a great course. The setting is superb. Swimming in the tarn first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day. I would just add to the above entry two suggestions: The fringe of the tarn has SSI status because the banks are the breeding area for a dragon fly not found...

4x4 over the Brecon Beacons **Superb**

Tina and I spent yesterday under the careful tutelage of Keith from Off Road Wales Ltd. For Tina and I, our first love is walking in the wilderness, preferably camping wild thrown into the mix. I have always felt that the 4x4 experience was not for me and also treated that fraternity with...

    Steralize Leather sheath

Just shooting from the lip on this one...I certainly do not have extensive leather-working expertise but how about the following possible non-chemical course of action: Fill the sheath with water and allow a short time for some of the fluid to be absorbed. Drain and then place in a microwave...

    AAAGH theiving "&%)*$

BR, apologies for not replying sooner...I have not been on the forum much this week. The image is cropped from the Woodsmoke website as per the link I supplied in the first entry. I do not own such an axe...yet. Vince

Consider one of Ben Orford's knives. I have a Woodlander and Tina uses a Whittler. We have enjoyed several good years service from both and they are still doing well.

    Mid Layer

As you have already stated, you possibly need more than one variant of the mid layer depending on the conditions. [Perhaps Buffalo 6 for colder, something lighter for warmer conditions] I am a great lover of merino wool base layers, but wool mid layers tend to be quite a bit heavier than their...

Mayhap their night vision was impaired by the repeated camera flashing... :D

    Carrying Water.

The bladder solution is useful because it occupies negligable space when not in use and, as noted earlier in this thread, conforms to whatever space is left in your Bergan when full. I have never perforated a bladder from Camelbak, although if you think there is a risk of this happening, then...

    Water purifiers

I have used the pre-mac during a week-long hike and it certainly supplied all my drinking needs and kept me free of stomach upset. It does not do anything that boiling or an iodine treatment wouldn't achieve [pre-mac uses iodine], but it offers ease of use on the move. For example where you...

    Petzl headtorch

I have tried [and still own] several examples of head torch and reckon the best of the bunch must be the Tikka XP. Versatile, compact, lightweight, excellent battery life and also fitted with a water resistant seal on the battery case opening. [not all models have this]

    GPS question

I place my vote in favour of this method. And whilst mentioning compasses I would add that, in addition to declination adjustment, it is prudent to select a compass that has a balanced needle. Those of us who travel over a wide range of latitudes will know that conventional compass needles...
