    Hand Drill

The top notch was made before burning in the pieces. The stick wandered into the notch and did not produce a coal. The bottom notch was made after burning in the pieces. I ended up with a nice coal.

Wife and I practicing with magnifying glass, firesteel and charcloth in Norther AZ

Below is a video of my wife and I practicing some fire starting techniques. I tried some very weathered shaggy juniper bark for my first tinder bundle. It was so dry that it kept splintering and was a bad choice. Then the cloud cover blocked out the sun. I had to make a new tinder bundle and...

American and British knife size difference

The older I get the smaller the knives I carry. The last custom fixed blade I had made for me has a 3 1/2" blade. There was an article I once read that stated "the better the hunter, the smaller the blade". For general bushcraft I do not want anything bigger than 4 5/8" blade.

Using a magnifying glass to start a fire

My wife carries a small glass one in her first aid kit and it has been awhile since I have practiced this method. It had rained the day before and the tinder was damp, too. It was about 1550 in the afternoon. The small tinder bundle is made from Shaggy Juniper.
