That's not a field beyond the trees, it's a lochin. Need to dig out a small area of it enough to serve as a duck pond, no access for an excavator so will have to be done by hand.

This holly tree is much older than it looks - but this should keep the roe deer off for the winter.

Got a load of this off Freecycle - donated by someone who complained that they couldn't split it and couldn't cut it. I think it's oak, and well seasoned at that. Probably too good to burn.

I think there's some knife scales in there.

Workshop will go in here - was clean as a whistle before Mrs R and the wee ones cluttered it all up

shout up if you need a hand with the digging, SWMBT is pretty good with a shovel, and i'm great at getting in the way and/or making tea!

That's a hell of an offer! Might have to take you up on it next summer if you fancy a bushy holiday with hard soggy labour thrown in. In the meantime we'll start with some chickens.

Looks great.
The wood is Elm I reckon.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would come back on that. It's really dense, with quite a complex grain. Heavy too. The wood and bark has turned silver with age.

Any ideas of what I should do with it? I was thinking about turning, but don't think I can afford the kit at the moment.

we've both volunteered at a local folk festival for years, our summers are always hard soggy labour! it's a genuine offer mate, we'll quite happily trade a bit of graft for somewhere to throw the tent up for a few days (access to your bathroom would be nice too!) SWMBT has been on at me for years to take her to scotland as she's never been north of the border, digging a duck pond seems as good a reason as any to give in to the nagging
