I've had this knife for well over a decade and never got round to doing anything with it. I think I aquired it when I was 13 or 14 from a show at the NAC.

Its blunt enough that it would bludgen a piece of wood before it cut it, I think it was actually bought blunt and never sharpened.

Its a stainless steel blade and unfortuantely a lock knife. Would I be better of chucking it back in my box of junk and aquiring a new one rather than trying to make it useful?

Why throw something away if you can still use it?
Sharpen it, make a sheath for it and take it out with you.
Why unfortunately a lockknife? Is it illegal then? The good part is, it will not snap shut with your fingers in between it, when you are using it.

I'll go against the wind and say throw it away. When I say throw it, I mean donate it to someone who will put it to use.

This is just my personal preference as I no longer trust locking knives since a jack pike folded on my fingers. Im sure it fractured my bone!

Sorry I should clarify, my junk box is certainly not a bin, more just a safe place for things I dont have an immediate use for. :p

but there are laws against carrying a fixed blade over 3 inches in the uk without good reason. While I keep it well packed away in a padded ripstop sheath and usually in a box of my camping/outdoor gear, its not something I would be want to be caught with irrespective of having a good reason.

It certainly has value - even if that is in teaching you how to sharpen it properly.

Give it a new lease of life I say.

Ogri the trog

I'd sharpen it up and use it personally. If you don't like the knife as a user I'd still keep it as a back up once it's got a good edge on it anyway.

I will certainly look at getting it sharpend. Its not clear from the image but I have had a go at it with a whetstone without much luck, but that was a few years ago and attempted with little or no idea of what I was doing. Some reading to do I think.

Thanks for the responses :)

wow iv got a knife exactly the same, it was my first ever knife as a kid iv had it over 15 years and its still as good as the day i got it, also it wasnt new when i got it so it could be quite abit older, id never throw mine just because it means something to me, i havnt used it for a while though.
if you do ever decide to throw away please throw it my way, be good for spare parts.

sorry just read the previous thread, if its the same blade as mine they do take some sharpening, id recomend usind a fine file/axe file and then just finish off with a wetstone.
hope that helps

Thanks ash, I will definitely have a go at sharpening it but think I will be on the look out for something a little more compact for normal use :)

you guys seem kinda paranoid about this locking knife thing. if im camping i always have a locking knife with me and never had a problem yet. i wouldnt walk around with any knife in town, but i havent been stopped by the police since i was in my teens so im struggling to understand your concern over the matter.

if your away up the hills with a pack and all the rest, and for some bizarre reason the police search you, the chances of it making it to court are slim to say the least

oh yeah - as for the knife in question, if thats the best knife you have, use it. alternatively if you have a preferred one use that!

hear hear!

as long as you can justify having the knife, there shouldn't be a problem!

lets be perfectly honest here gents, I think the 'old faithful' mora clipper we all seem to carry would have the fuzzy a lot more riled than a sub 3" folder that locks...

Heyho ,
I'd sharpen it and use it as a camp knife . Keep it with your camping gear , when you're camping it's as illegal as a standard cutlery knife from the kitchen draw .
Cheers , Trev .

At the moment my camping box is my junk box :p

Amazingly I have actually got an edge on it in the most horrific way possible

I'll have to do something about sharpening it properly.

Ignoring the horrific contraption I have used on the blade so far, what would be my best grind on a knife like this? Due to the afore mentioned contraption and also attempts with a small (far too small) "reconstitued stone" sharpening stone, the edge is in a terrible state and needs some TLC.
