the double edged knife only has one purpose, and by the looks of it too big to be used in the correct manner.

water carrying and sterilising kit?

wire saw is useless i have found, better with a silky or bahco laplander.

I would swap 90 degree torch for a head torch and AA powered fenix/surefire etc

Dont know your location in OZ, but if there are tress i would get a hammock, preferably a hennesey as it should make snakes/insects etc have a harder time getting in.

A kit list would be good, forgive me if i have mentioned things you already have. jsut going by pictures.

well i use this bag for my camping trips, im of on a 3 day trip next weeks so i gotta work out foood and drinks -_-

what kind of food are you thinking of taking with you? I tend to go for a lot of dried stuff like noodles, its easy enough to find water over here you can boil. I try to keep an MRE stashed at the bottom of my pack for if I'm feeling lazy, but the tend to be pretty expensive here to i try not to use them a lot lol!

couldn't help notice the hip flask too ;) glad I'm not alone there- what do you keep in yours?

well ima take rice(i love my rice) noodles, maby canned stuff not sure, maby some think sweet? andwas gonna take bottle of vodka or soemthink yummy

yeah i camp on a river or near it so lots of water

cans tend to be heavy I find, and you need to carry them out as well as in. is there any chance of catching anything ( fish or game) where you go? its always fun to have a go with a hand line, or snag a some rabbit with an air rifle- just something tasty you go with whatever you bring :D

well true may not take cans atfer all fish i dont think so, but there snakes rabbit wild pigs around in summer (withc is now) my mums sister lives ona 7,000 ace farm and we camp there pretty much, but it summe now is it very very hot :( but there rabbit and snakes may have a go at catching them, but i like it better in winter get below zero middle of the day when night comes frost covers stuff and the surface of water turn to ice sometimes we find animals dead but yeah ^^

wild pigs?! woah! hell pigs are the only farmyard animal I'm wary of, they are nasty and have MASSIVE teeth! i wouldn't want to go after one of them without a very good ranged takedown method, some crazy compound bow or rifle :S

Can someone explain the B.O.B concept to me as I don't really get what it's all about.

Is it a S.H.T.F kind of scenario where you grab what you can and head for the hills ?

B.O.B is where a nuclear fallout makes you mutate so you grow an extra 3 arms, with 5 arms you can arms yourself with 5 knives, one for each arm. Its really good for fending off wild life :p

The BOB concept comes from the military AFAIK. When you're carrying your big bergen across country and get hit up by the enemy, you ditch the main pack and "bug out" with a smaller bag that contains essentials, which in the military might include radios, some food, water, survival supplies etc.

Anyone agree or disagree with that?

M

I think that may well be where the concept comes from however I think for many it is no longer a pack containing some essentials in case you are separated from your main pack/home/vehicle, but has become 'the' pack that contains those items you will need for indefinite survival should some disaster occur. There are many different threads on the subject and many many different opinions about what a person should pack into such a bag, perhaps 'WeThePeoplexfbm' should have a look through those for some ideas.

Possibly the best site for information on this sort thing was written by this man who described his and his family's experiences during Hurricane Katrina.

:)

Yes they do have something to do with it.

When I was trained by the SBS - Yes , but not in the SBS and it was only a weekend ...... they called it a grab bag and it was a daysack tucked under the Bergan top lid.

'Normal' Army tend not to emphasise it that much, I think the Special Forces are more into that idea because they anticipate having to run away fast and having to lose the main Bergan . Having said that using a daysack puts most of what you would want on your back anyway for short periods of time and there is always stuff on the belt order anyway.

If you websearch for Bug Out Bags or GOOD (Get out of dodge) bags you will have hours of fun.

PS One of the games the SBS chaps used to play was for survival training they'd apparently park a boat offshore, roll a dice to see what they would have, eg smock only, belt order, grab bag and full bergan, then splash and swim ashore. Takes all sorts I suppose.
