Ok guys, I have been listening to you all go on about char cloth for so long that I thought I would try and make some, just to see what all the fuss was about.

Old tea towel in a tin with a hole, dumped it on embers and 40 mins later got the blackest looking thing, pulled a piece off, used my fire steel once to get about 9 tiny embers on it, placed in some tissue and blew on it, bugger me nearly took my nose off.

I can now see the excitement over it, quickest fire I have ever started.

Thanks to Tadpole for his tutorial.

That tutorial was how I learned earlier this year.

It's great when something like that works for the first time.

When you consider that I mainly used maya dust ( bloody dear too ), and my wife just chucked out this tea towel, brilliant, cost me nothing for a big sheet of the stuff...

If you do a bit of a search for Maya dust, the majority of comments will be along the lines of "Great tin, but the filling is cr*p!"......
...but even thats changeing to a plastic affair now......
perhaps folk will stop buying it for the tin alone.....
