OK, it's about time someone asked this. What do we think of Bear Grylls? I can't make my mind up, he's certainly got a lot of impressive achievements under his belt and his survival exploits are quite entertaining too........well, they are for a while.
On the downside however, he can't be compared to Mr. Mears, he just can't, that would be blasphemy in the highest. He uses the word 'but' far, far, far too often, just listen to him for 10 minutes. Everything thing he does is always the biggest or the hardest or the hottest or coldest he has ever experienced and I did hear a rumour that most of his program was staged in that he spends nights in hotel's etc. and how come when he lands his parachute in the middle of nowhere with no idea where he is, there's always a camera crew waiting?.......BUT........and it's a big but, he does have a very personalised line in abject crazyness which is always a good thing and some of his survival 'skills' are things no self respecting Ray Mears-ist would ever try (drinking water squeezed from an elephant turd anyone?)
So what do we think?

I find him at best a giggle, he is too dangerous in my oppinion to display his "tallents" to a viewing public. I have watched amature video of bushcrafters who have held my attention more and displayed more skill in the wild.

Just my thoughts, right or wrong as they may be, but mine.

Some of his habits are bit dubious. This is a man who on no less than three occasions has pee'd on himself on national TV, and amazingly all to solve different survival 'problems' I just think he gets off on it.

We should invite him to a Bushmoot

If he doesnt amuse us, we can put him out of our misery right there and then.

I think if you type" Bear Grylls" in the forum search you'll get a pretty good idea of the majority opinion of him on here - and it's not good!

"Walter", "Sensationalist" and even "Idiot" have been used to describe him and of course, the hotel story didn't do his credibility any favours.

I think what he does is harmless fun and appeals to an er... certain audience but comparing him to Ray Mears is like comparing the late Steve Irwin to David Attenborough. One is appealing to as broad an audience as possible, at the expense of educational depth - whilst the other educates a target audience. One has fantastic presenting skills and looks the part - the other is a fantastic educator and can impart knowledge in depth - you get the drift.

Love the title of this thread - it can mean "The Bear Grylls Question" or "DIE Bear Grylls - questions?"

If it's the latter - no, I don't think he should die :D

Was he not recently exposed as being a fake, much of what he claims to have done is said to be taken with a pinch of salt, hotels when not filming, crew made his reft and took it apart etc etc.

I've just had a flick through the previous Bear Grylls (hadn't noticed them) threads and think I may have opened a can of worms or at least reopened a can painstakingly sealed by mods (sorry guys)

I thought the title could work both ways but I have to say the source is a little contentious.

I've always viewed Bear Gryll's show as something akin to Pro Wrestling. Slightly entertaining, sometimes painful to watch, but you know all along that it's not real.

Even before the stories "broke" about a lot of it being staged... he's with a camera crew, and they miraculously have cameras that follow him as he "spontaneously" slides down a gravel covered slope. It all seemed "staged."

I was alarmed, though, when in the Australian Outback (Is the Kimberly considered outback?) he advocated drinking urine.

That's never a good idea. Ever.

I must admit I quite like the guy , He reminds me of a boy at school who used to eat soap , wear his clothes back to front and do all manner of amusing stuff to make himself more popular . ( no it wasnt me ):)

Sometimes, it's hard to to tell the difference.

To quote Homer Simpson:

You don't buy beer. You rent it.

Well, in that case twice the use was had for one rental payment.

Survival course, we were told it was drinkable...........so that night bets were placed. I don't rate it as a beverage, but if I was really, really, desperate in the middle of nowhere without a Sainsbury's or puddle of water in sight, well............

Its drinkable, but as I understand it only as a last resort ... and only once. Don't try to drink it once it comes out a second time!

Eeeeewwww!
That's really taking the p~~s!

I did hear that the other way of getting urine in to your body was by rectal infusion, that's when you really find out who your mates are!

BTW Bear, watchable, entertaining, in the same way as "You've been framed"
