For many of us coffee isn’t just a flavoured drink, it’s a drug (like alcohol or nicotine) taken for its effect. It is still a highly enjoyable flavoured drink with a lot of nuanced flavours that risk being lost in the making.

If I drink decaf I keep getting the feeling that I’ve just put an unfinished drink down somewhere.

But I can't stand drinking coffee out of plastic! Has to be drunk from bone china :)
I had a few of those mugs but, eventually, they started spurting coffee granuals past the seal and I've chucked them.
Very old post to reply to, but I had a load of trouble with the SmartCafe mug I had until I realised I needed to tap the mug down on a work surface and wait for the grinds to sink. Otherwise they sit on the top, block the filter and then the hot coffee escapes past the seal. Now I know this they work very well. I often use it for single cup coffee and pour from the plastic mug into a China one.

Not bone china of course, far too snobby

I usually have two Zylis ( previously Smart Cafe) mugs with me. If there are more of us I’ll pour into an SS mug for the others.

I have a Smart Cafe mug but they are getting old and the seal is getting stiff. It’s OK for large leaf tea.

Ha ha, like i say i am relatively new Coffee drinking really. As a Britisher i know it sacrilegious but i cannot drink tea, it’s revolting stuff, tastes absolutely vile. I am still feeling my way around Coffee and the umpteen methods on how to make it, well mind blown :-D

There’s so many different methods, i never realised. It’s a dark art.

It’s just coffee, don’t it all taste the same really???
Apply that to anything that you yourself like, like e.g. ale, wine, whisky, orange juice, lemonade etc. and you'll (hopefully) see that it can seldom be said to apply to anything. Even water.

No, if your taste buds suit it then there’s avenues to explore.

I used to drink instant and not care. Now it’s got more refined.

I’m in Crete right now and I’ve just found the machine that makes the good tasting coffee (to me).

If I take one species of coffee and use an aeropress I could easily make you three different coffees straight off that taste different.

It largely depends on how bothered you are and what level of ritual you want.

I’ve probably said above somewhere already but I’ve known someone to weigh the beans, grind to a very specific size, thermometer for the water temp, measure the force they use to press the coffee.
My pour it in, scoop some coffee, press whatever in contrast.
We’re both happy.

Hmmmmmm.
Quite apart from variables to the coffee:
The bean,
The method,
The grind,
The water,
The temperature and
The brew time,

…… there are various pollutants that some folk add in various quantities such as milk, sugar, syrups and alcohol. I’ve even heard rumours of folk putting condensed milk in their coffee but I don’t believe it :lmao:

You could spend a long time discovering which you enjoyed, which method you liked most and which you would make in an emergency.

I wouldn’t invest in specialist equipment other than something basic to start with. The easiest way to start is in your local supermarket. You could probably buy a cafetière or a mocha pot there as well. Then work your way through the Taylor’s range. You will find considerable differences. You might stop there or explore further.

The main thing of course:
Enjoy!
