Imgbb the image hosting site I have been using seems to be allowing use only by paying members. This may be just a personal thing relating to me as I have used the free site for some time, so perhaps it's some kind of built in limit for usage time/content amount etc:
If I use the Forum insert image tab, it asks for a URL...I haven't the foggiest idea of how to get URL's for my photos. Has each photo got a different URL?
I did a brief Net search for other hosting sites and either they are too tech for me to bother with and/or invariably US sites wanting a fee..
Any suggestions gratefully listened too..But technical computer/Internet language shuts my small brain down, so aim any advice at a rather dim 5 year old please...:lmao:

Like yours, my brain was designed to survive in a world that existed many birthdays ago. I’m writing in terms that I understand. If my post reads as patronising then I apologise.

There are those here who disagree but I can manage Dropbox easily and it’s free as long as you avoid the upgrade trip wires.

Right now your browser (Google, Safari, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, other) is showing [bushcraftuk.com] probably at the top of your screen.
Hidden in those words is the code that will bring you straight to this page - that is the page’s url. Just copy those words. Does imgbb have anything similar when you bring up a specific image? Is there a link sign anywhere when you bring up one of your images. Clicking on the link sign copies the url for the item/document/ picture/file that you have selected.

If someone had explained this to me in these terms some time ago my blood pressure would probably be closer to acceptable.

Confusing because it looks the same (on my phone) no matter which page of Bushcraft UK I’m looking at but behind the words the url is changing.

Are you using a computer or a mobile phone?

Computer Chris, my phone is old Flip open type cannot get Internet.

Thanks Pattree. With URL. Is the URL limited to just one photo or does it give access to all the photos in the folder? There are photos of people who would be very upset if their faces appeared because I pressed the wrong button.

I'll have to log off for a while, expecting visitor, but I'll return to tghe puzzle later..

You need to identify the steps, and write up the process.

1. First think about what you are trying to achieve, and why. Great content... deserves to be a feature. As a forum fantastic posts and photographs are easily buried and lost because too many people treat every thread like it's a public house. And most of the technical end of hosting is really really fragile: Big tech isn't going to pay the sever costs to host all the rubbish you can throw at it!

2. So it's only a quick snap?

3. Different hosting services offer different levels of service? But I'm not really familiar with this... Let's keep it fairly simple: Google offers 15 GB as a free tier, you need to keep your account active, meaning logging in maybe once every 6 months? Proton offers either 500 MB or 1 GB free tier, again you need to keep your account active. I REALLY like proton, because it's easy to keep all your accounts separated, ease of use for the win. imgbb asking for money, erm I get why... but then I'd wonder who is really giving me the best hosting for my cash.

With Google and Proton, I think I can share an entire folder with groups of people. Meaning dump sub folders and individual notes for every book I've read this last year... might be interesting.

But let's stick with imgbb for now.

4. You go to the website: https://imgbb.com/

5. You press the big blue button.

6. You give it a file ... This step is you DIRECTING it to a file.

7. You set the image self-destruct timer. You could ask for infinite.

8. You press the green button to "upload". This sends the file from your computer to theirs.

9. This is the messy step! imgbb.com is trying to be clever and give you the BB code so you can *just* paste the code plus URL into the box on a forum. *edit: I got this part wrong... some things do work... so homework time!

But I started with extracting the URL for the image from the blob of text. So let's continue (or delete my post later)

10. So for example, my test photo or screenshots as I write this up:

Full code:

*edit... OK the forum DOES accept this.
So this can be solution one.

=>
Just the URL:

11. Adding the URL into my post using the "insert image" icon. (Option 2)

12. Set the cursor position for where the image should be.

13. Click on the "insert image" icon... and paste the url.

It's like the film Inception (2010) now!

The problem, with all these hosting sites, is they are not permanent. Look back at old threads and the content and value are lost because photos are published via hosting sites. The history of this fantastic forum is a valuable source of ideas and skills but ruined when the photos are lost.

For £15 a year we can put the photos directly into our posts and they last as long as Tony can justify the server space.

Normally you just upload a photo to their site, then use the BB code they supply and copy paste it to the forum in your post.

Photobucket did however start charging for folk to have access to their own pics after years of being free.

Yep, I've used Imgbb for ages because I found it easy to use the BB code but as stated, now ...for me anyway..the format of the usual upload page has changed and they want a paid account.

But I think I have solved the problem with a different outfit.
