Hottest day ever, "hmm, what shall I do. I know, I'll dig a hole".

I spent ages rummaging about looking for my lovely silk double hammock, to no avail. Thin hammocks are superb in the heat, all round cooling.

Might be worth pointing out that your tomatoes could do with a water Nigel. :D

Cemented a square ‘hole’ in the ground made from gravel boards to accommodate a 100mm fence post to string my hammock or tarps up at the end of the garden.

When it’s not quite as hot I’ll run up into the loft to get my hammock gear and string some thing up for the evening.

Great idea! Did you have to join the boards together by nails or something, or are they just held by the outer “casing” of cement?

I did dig the hole last evening but it was still very warm.

Those tomatoes are grass and weeds. That is all that grows in the greenhouse house now because it’s too hot.

How deep is the socket?

Reason I ask is there's a lot of force placed on it by the hammock and several folks I've seen using the same system reported it failed because the posts were too shallow.

A fair question - I once tried a hammock set up without knowing how deep the poles were buried, where I fell asleep in the hammock off the ground but woke up with backside on the ground and the poles at alarming inward slant. Epic fail considering the slagging I got, but coulda been worse.
