Call me a paranoid cynic with trust issues but no way am I going hand over my DNA to anyone. That's just because companies and government agencies can't be trusted not to misuse or sell my information. They have a long track record of repeatedly being untrustworthy in precisely this manner.

That's before you get into the territory of tinfoil hat conspiracy theories about AI designed DNA targeted bio-weapons. Even if something like that seems far fetched today who knows what technology might exist in the future?

That was my response; my sons both work in IT.
They say there is no privacy, and it's all traceable....and it's all for sale.

They would prefer that I didn't do it, so I will comply.

Apparently they don’t say anything about your ancestors, they basically link to where you have commonality with people today.

But you might be interested to hear you probably have about 2.7% of your genome of Neanderthal origin.

Mmm... I believe the figures published independently from the service companies are:

Accuracy of identifying each marker > 99%
Identifying close relatives – very accurate
Accuracy of ethnicity 70 – 95% - varies between groups and population history.

So far MH results have been quite accurate though not entirely consistent wifey's sisters for some reason are not equally related to her.

I have read that is a trait of DNA not necessarily an error of analysis! It's something to do with the fact we don't all take the same DNA from our parents (or something, the science is beyond me).

Yep, we differ in the amount we inherit from father/mother but the total should be the same. Maybe the test handles that slightly oddly.

There is that risk for all of us I guess. A real paternity pandoras box.

Id of close relatives is pretty easy, this much I know, and identifying markers also. How markers interact to come to an idea of ethnicity is far from known nor is the interaction between cultural and genetic factors. Its interesting too that the idea of race from a genetic POV is bogus.
