WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
A 'softshell' jacket in a medium weight 100% merino loden fabric, with elbow, hood and shoulder reinforcements in L24 Ventile.

I must admit that I shamelessly copied Varusteleka's one, as an overall design / idea. Not doing this commercially in any way and this is just for me and family. I have bought a lot of Varusteleka products (in fact, I think in that photo I am wearing their merino hiking socks and their merino henley), I really like their quality and I yet have to have any gripes with any of their kit; I'd highly recommend them. I always wanted the 'woolshell' jacket and pants they sell, but they were a bit heavy for my budget at this moment, I recently took up sewing, so... it was time to pay homage to them by making my own. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Speaking of price and flattery, Varusteleka's offering is ca. £250. My materials were probably £40 for Loden, call it £15 for ventile, plus another £10 for thread and top quality zippers, so I put it together for £65. The one they sell has a lot more features like underarm vents, handwarmer pockets, phone pockets on the sleeves, and probably some adjustments, none of which I recreated. It took me ca. 10h to make this, but I had no patterns ready, so say it would take me 8h if I had patterns, likely 5h if I was doing it for a living all the time, and say it would be ca. 6h with the other features which mine is missing.

6h is a lot of time for someone skilled to be working. Labour costs a lot of money, and people need to be able to make a living indeed. Considering they make their stuff in Europe and not by what amounts to slave labour in far away places, big kudos to them and all businesses who keep their production in their own countries. We will keep supporting folks!

Fantastic job there @Sooty22 !

Last weekend I tried making my first tote bag.

Cotton calico for the straps, pockets and lining.
Flecktarn cotton ropstop for the upper.
1000D Cordura for the lower.

Tidy stitching. I avoid high-contrast thread/fabric as I make good 'functional' seams but they are never that tidy!
I think I'll get the family to each make one bag! That's a great idea for getting everyone to take their bags to the shop; maybe the 'connection' will make it easier to remember, and save the 50p a pop for the bags 'for life'...

I made some candles using my new molds. I came up with an ingenious way of setting the wicks up as well which I will post in the TOP Tips thread. What did you make today?

Never made anything yet today; just woke up. But I have been making some wicked slingshots lately, one of which is patterned after a double barrel .410 shotgun. When I figure out how to post a pic here I have some nice shots to show off.

Any hints on how I can upload pics and vids? Got some nice stuff that I made and I'm itching to get some posted. I have slingshots laying around all over the house and I'm getting a bunch of carvings on the walls. I'm between surgeries now with complications and side effects ad nauseum. And with the adhd, I'm getting myself outfitted for the spring and summer while there's lots of time.

But yeah, if someone can type up a list of steps - or a link to it - it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to contributing and sharing ideas. You have a good one,

Al.

OK, I have a page on DeviantArt with a gallery. I may see if I can set up an unlockable cloud folder. Something to putter at over the winter till I can plant some weed haha.

I'm working on a wall hanging fot the living room today. It's an Arctic scene, with a polar bear stalking up behind a pair of seals at a hole. And I'm prepping more wood for another slingshot rifle. I'm thinking a replica flintlock this time. Along with the double barrel replica I mentioned already, a couple years ago I did a wooden assault rifle powered by 3/8" industrial bungee cord strung through two pairs of pulleys in a double compound arrangement.

See why I'm eager to post?

All sounds good. If you can afford it I would pay the membership fee on here. It goes to supporting the forum and you can post all you want. I would like to see what you doing. DD x

I used Dropbox before I became a member. Still do for video.

Be careful though.
The link above is for the free “Basic”version and it really is free.

But

The site has tripwires to get you to pay for an upgrade. It’s not a problem, there are many worse.

Dropbox works, eh? I got into Google Drive and sort of transitioned there. Had it forgot until now, actually. Must look into firing it up again. Short on money right now; I'm in between surgeries and not working. Thanks, have a good one from Canada.
