Socks

Socks. I know, it's an exciting subject but let's try to keep it civil, if possible.

She keeps throwing them away. Says they are more hole than anything else and they can no longer be defined as socks at all.

I did buy some new ones online, but getting them out of the box, it's apparent they're not going to stand up to work, walking the dog and the general stomping about required of them. I'm going to have to put an order in for something decent that will last. Thick walking/hiking boot socks ideally.

So, any good recommendations for something actually worth the money? Any good brands out there?

I did get bought a pair of these 'Darn Tough' socks recently and they're excellent. They come with a lifetime guarantee. I may invest in another pair (quite pricey though).

Darn Tough also get my vote for longevity/robustness - mine are as good as new after a couple of years pretty regular use.

Not all Bridgedales are built equal, though, with mixed results from their less heavyweight socks, of which several have ended up with holes in fairly quickly.

I bought 10 pairs of these Salomon from Blacks last year on offer. Black ones for my son and Grey for me.

Doing fine. No holes, pulls, etc. I wear them all day in warehouse/office setting.
I also bought some thick Bridgedale Explorer for Winter in the snow and they're superb.
At the moment the price difference is similar, last year the Salomon's were about half the cost of the Bridgedale.

They need a warranty when they cost €30 a pair.

Supermarket socks, for me, for everyday wear, and Decathlon or Horze for hiking, riding or skiing.

I find British Army Desert socks are really good for hill walking and are well made. Not that I've tried many other varieties but they're certainly miles better than any typical Premark or supermarket socks which cost a similar price.

I've found that Corrymoor socks stand up to the daily beating of work and walking the dogs. A good range of styles, thicknesses and colours and they are incredibly comfortable, too.

Given I was taught to darn, I up until the 2010's still had a few pairs of my old issued H.J. Hall Combat socks of which were more darn than original. - I left the mob in '96

But yeah as bushcrafters we should be learning to darn our socks given they can fail at any time and sock shops can be scarce out in the sticks. A nice round pebble can do as a darning mushroom and threads to darn with can be teased from less critical clothing, if of course one still wears knitted clothing

Wow! How long are you going to be out there for? Put on your spare socks and darn the others when you get home!

If you don’t have spare socks but do have a wool needle then why not just sew up the hole for now and again darn when you get home. (No I do not believe that it would be uncomfortable, especially as I always wore two pairs of socks in my boots for walking.)

Harkila Expedition Long socks are really robust and very warm! You might think I’m mad at this price but they are the best and they last! I bought the Thrudark equivalent and they weren’t as thick, also no mention of the wool content.
