I am new to fungi. going on a course/forage on Saturday and a friend and I will also be looking to have a forage about on Sunday. She has hears that there are some good areas around Ayr and along the River Ayr, but I can't seem to find any information, and can't get the search function on this site to work :)

Does anyone have any good recommendations for areas with edible mushrooms around Ayr, or along the River Ayr? Or can anyone point me in the direction of a good place to find such information?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. And, hmmm, I hadn't thought of that :)

Round here the foragers make good money selling to local pubs and restaurants, hence massive secrecy. There are also lots of truffles about. Fungal locations are GPS tagged, labelled by mushroom type, and are closely guarded secret.

Nice thing about mushrooms is they’re often totally unpredictable, so you still stand a great chance of finding something if you keep looking.

Mushroom pickers here wear camo .... so you can tell them pretty easily as no one else round here wears green up the mountain.

Welcome to the Forum. As stated above, foragers are all pretty cagey about where they get their hauls. It's a long, slow process of going out every season and looking until you strike gold. i have some amazing patches all over the country, but it's taken a good many years to find them.
A word to the wise though, a 1 day course will be very limited on what they can show you. Invest in some very good books, field guides and larger ref books. The bibles are Roger Philips Mushrooms and our own Geoff Dans book. Spend time reading them (they are not easy bed time stories, lol), and especially learn the toxic ones.
If in doubt, take lots of photos, top, bottom and underneath, and note what the fungi are growing with.
Be warned, it can be very addictive, but worth the time and effort if you persevere.
Oh, and when you start getting into the preserving and drying them, you know theres no hope:)
