Is there such a thing as bad hot chocolate?
I like cadburys hot chocolate powder and also cocoa powder.
I like to add honey when I'm camping, when at home I like a pinch of spice (depending how I'm feeling ginger/cinnamon/nutmeg etc.)
I add the milk first and make a paste, before adding the hot water, I find this makes the best 'crema' foam on top.
If I have real chocolate I also like breaking in a small piece and stirring it in.
Woody Girl is right that the best hot chocolate has melted chocolate in the bottom.

Due to the diabetes; I'm partial to a couple of squares of Montezuma's 100% once a week.

i do about 60/40 milk to water. i make a paste with the powder and a small bit of cold milk first, then add warm milk and stir vigorously then top up with hot water

Well iooks like I got a new business! No travellers checks.... cash only.
This rather inspired me last night to try a new idea. Winter spiced ribena hot chocolate . Even tho I used instant hot chocolate it was very nice. Think this one is gonna stay in my repotoir.
Alcohol and sauna???? Not the best mix for sure. Nah. .... tucked up in the snuggle pit with a good book and a cup of hot choc with brandy.

.All of the Finnish and most of the northern Swedish population exist only because the mix Sauna and alcohol......
(there are some teetotalerian people in Northern Sweden called Laestadians that do not touch alcohol or other Earthly pleasures. Not many of them for obvious reasons. )
It is fine, as long as you drink with some sort of responsibility. In the beginning at least........
Check with the boys at the excellent Finnish Ex army stuff online shop Varulesteka, you will see I speak the truth.
Hot Cocoa or Chokolate you can not imbibe in a sauna. Nor coffee or tea.... Tastes horrible.
Beer or vodka. Yes.

Rumour has it that chucking Vodka on a Sauna pit rejuvenates dead skin cells. Sorry if that’s too sciencey, there’s no easy way to explain it. Ask Janne.
True. Also the vapour disinfects the lungs.
The side effect is that if you pour about a bottle of vodka on the hot stones you get pretty intoxicated.
Warning - we DO NOT do this if the Sauna has a wood heater, fed from inside the Sauna.
Normally we just pour water on the stones, to increase the humidity to unbearable levels...
But now we are going Off Topic.......
When our son was little, I tried several times to make a hot chocolate drink from Milk Chocolate bars, but found them sickly sweet. It was better to use bars type Lindt 70%.
I tried once to make it with the Lindt 99%, but it was not nice. Harsh, bitter, nasty.

I quite like white chocolate with vanilla. It is a bit sweet I must admit but delicious all the same. I use the aldi chocolate... something Roth I think it's called .... senior moment brain freeze I've forgotten, but regular aldi afficionados will know what I mean. Nice for a treat occasionally.

Tend to use Cadbury's (non instant) hot chocolate, just with hot milk.
Did finally find myself in a shop that sold Milo last year. Milo with hot milk is very nice. Plus it still comes in a metal tin, for use after.
Tesco shelves it on the World Foods section, rather than with the rest of the hot drinks.

Exactly how I make it. Brandy only on very cold days or for 'medicinal purposes'.

Dark rum is really nice in sweet hot drinks too.
There is also an artificially flavoured Rum, from Austria, brand Stroh. The 80% one was specifically made with cold and chilled outdoor people in mind!

Spiced rum is pretty good too in hot chocolate at the end of a cold and frosty ramble. Havnt had that since the 70s. It used to be a regular Sunday evening treat after walking the dog for hours in the winter. Can you get spiced rum nowadays? I do have a suspicion that my boyfriends father used to make his own. It was delicious and warmed the frozen bits incredibly well!
