Thanks for the heads up. I shall have a good read of that page. The ban including camping stoves is going to be a problem. May have to rethink how I do food on my trip, unless northern Europe can get a substantial amount of rain some time soon (tho not while I'm cycling please!)

Yes, the ’no flame’ poses a huge problem. I am sorry that your plans get disturbed.

I will notify this thread if the Swedish media mentions that the fire ban gets lifted!

Thanks. I did some googling of what the situation is in Norway, looks like an open fire ban is in place in areas there too. Shall have to keep an eye on it.

I would move mu trip a month or two if I was you.
No foubt the ban will be lifted by then.

Not really an choice for me, I am limited to when I can get the time off work. Also if I push it later than September the weather is going to make it harder. It's also going to be colder.

September weather should be fine. Still fine weather, less mosquitoes and midgets.
It has been hot. Hot weather = mozzies and midges have veritable orgies and breed in huge numbers.

Trust me, you have never experienced that.
Even here in the Caribbean the mozzies are nothing compared to Scandinavia after a hot week!

I live in a swamp... I am covered in mossie bites as I've concluded it's better to have the windows open to lower the temp, and accept some bites, than it is to shut the windows and boil.

My trip was always planned to be September to minimize the insects, before it gets too cold, and when I can get time off work.

Suggestions:
Before Coprnhagen go to Roskilde just West of C., a superb Viking ship museum there.
Copenhagen to Malmo ( submarine, marine museum)
to Lund ( cathedral ) to Helsingborg then coast road north to Mölle, follow coastal rads to Göteborg, road north to the islands Tjörn and Orust, then North east to Trollhättan, Vänersborg, north to Åmål, Charlottenberg.
Do not miss Oslo: some superb museums, specially the Viking museum.

I would try to take the ferry back from Kristiansand in southern Norway to Hirthals in Denmark and go south from there.

Unfortunately in order to cover the distance by bike each day that I need to make the trip in time, I have to average 150km per day, which isn't going to give me too much time to museum hop as I go.

On the way back I have 2 days planned in oslo meeting friends, will check out the viking museum there!

That is my plan currently.

You will have a fantastic trip!

Just out of interest, are you planning to try to cycle mainly on lesser ( gravel) roads?
As little on main roads as possible?

A bit of a mixture of both. My bike is built to cope with both, but the main thing is to cycle through pretty scenery and get away from everything for a bit. I have a destination in mind, so in order to keep the speed up I will have to do some bits on tarmac roads, but I don't want to do the whole thing on big main roads with the trucks etc...

The first few days, through Northern Germany and bits of Denmark I'm likely to just take the fastest route, so I can maximise my time in .se and .no.

The main roads are busy of course, but most have a wide area on the side, so it will be safe.

I would bring a repair kit for the tyres though. I have had uncountable punctures on my bike on the gravel.

You will see that Norway is a far more scenic country than Sweden!

I forgot to ask, did you manage to find the English speaking (Swedish) Right to Roam site?
All clear or do you need any clarification? The English version is a bit thin...

The Rainy Side of the Lakes.
I stayed north of Varberg when I worked in Sweden. The main road is easily and best avoided, but the side roads are still pretty good, much safer for for cycling and very scenic in places. The coastline along there is very nice too.
Look out for ICA stores; they are like Spar shops in the UK and are often the only shops in small towns and villages but are often surprisingly well stocked.
