Hi, I've just 'inherited' a couple of birch logs- 8 to 10 inches across and 3 foot long.
I want to carve some bowls and a kuksa....never done it before.
What I need is advice on cutting these beasts down to size. This feels like a dumb question but do I need a bowsaw or can I just use my old cheapie woodsaw?
Thanks all.
H.

If you can, I'd split them length wise to stop them checking, and then seal the ends with varnish, paint or similar. Then you can decide what you want to make from them.

Just crack on with your woodsaw, birch is easy to cut and there's no point buying a new saw.

If you were planning to do a lot of logging type work with various types of woods then invest in a bowsaw, but otherwise save your time and money for the creative side of woodwork.
