I have a slaters hatchet stamped GCC.

They also do a premium line called Velvicut. I became aware of them via Danner's website.

Not tried one myself but have heard of them. There's a review of one model on Ross Gilmore's blog if you're interested. I see Council Axes advertised in The Bushcraft Magazine being sold by Edged Arts (no connection etc); here's a nice little Hudson Bay Camp Axe for example.

Thanks folks, thought I might need one to cut through the tumble weeds on this thread !.

I've seen them on ebay, Mary & thought the price was to good to be true, so wanted to find out if anyone had one. My fear is that they turn out to made somewhere in the far east, but it does say American made.

The velvicut range are better finished and use better (harder) steel than the standard council tool axes... the standard ones come in about 53/54rc and the velvicut about 57/58 iirc.... just look at them as standard and premium quality...
