Hi folks,

I've a metal jerry can which i want to use as a water tank when at base camps, it has some light rust inside though. Does anyone have any advice on removing the rust and treating the can to prevent it re-rusting whilst still being safe to store water.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,
Erro

You can remove the loose rust by putting a hand full of small stones in a.d adding some water. Give it a good shake - empty and repeat at few times. Treating the inside will be difficult!!! To be honest save time and effort and buy a plastic gerry can!!!

KF is right, don't drink water from it, would you drink from a rusty bean can?

The black plastic army carriers are cheap enough or get something like

I would if it had some whisky in it. :D

No way I'd use the jerry can though, rusty steel is very difficult to treat to make safe and then the chemicals used will probably leach. I use the 5l PET bottles from the supermarket-they weigh nothing when empty.
