I have, in the past, used kitchen worktops for long benches. Building suppliers often have damaged or returned tops which they will sell much cheaper than new. You take a chance with the colours though!

couple of things I did to mine was to cover the top with hardboard, this can be replaced easily after a few years use, I cut out a recess for sharpening stones
I also built it as two 4(foot) by 2 benches and hinged them together so I normally have an 8 by 4 against the wall or can swing out one end for a 4 by 4 bench
the entire thing was contructed in 4x2 with a thick ply worksurface, shelf mid way underneath
