I'm after some good, solid woolen socks, not the one size fits all, but I'll be happy with a size 9-12, 11 would be better

all help appriciated

Ta very much

Richard

The best I've used were from norweigan devold. Can't praise them enough, specially the models nansen and hunter. There website is rubbish though. Woolpower (or ullfrotté) makes some that are good. Smartwools mountaineering variety are good but don't last as long as devold. Ulvang is another norweigan brand that has some good models.

The second best socks I've used were knitted by mum. Hard for you to get by though :o If you do happen to know anybody who do knows how to knit, it isn't so hard actually. Make sure you use hi-quality wool (I prefer icelandic).

Go merino Richard

Smartwool are the very best socks I have ever worn. Costco are doing exact copies for £8 a pack of four - I'll have a look for you next time I'm in.

I used to be impressed with Smartwool, but they all disintegrated in short order. So now I'm not so impressed. Personally I wouldn't have Smartwool again if they were giving them away.
By far the best wool socks I've ever had are Falke. I wouldn't buy anything else now.

I echo Lurch's comments on Smartwool. I bought a couple of pairs of the Hiking socks last year - I've worn them probably twice each, and they look like the dog's been at 'em. Not impressed. Also, because they are double-layered, they move inside my boot - which means an added risk of blisters. Not good.

My everyday and short hike socks are basically a 70% wool knock off of the British issue sock - loopstich sole heel and toes of the foot, ribbed elsewhere and very comfortable. Very long lasting.
For canoeing and major hikes I use Smartwool - usually their Trekking socks - and I find them supurb. Tough, long lasting, quick to regain bounce after use (and a wash) and very very comfortable - my only reason for not using Smartwool all the time is the price!
I have used Smartwool in the jungle, in the desert, in temperate zones, up mountains and in rivers and never had a problem.
Boots I wear out fairly quickly but I can honestly say that I have some Smartwool socks that have outlasted some boots and canoe shoes!
I think that the original Smartwool socks may be tougher than the current offerings and that washing them carefully prolongs their life (mine get coolwashed on wool cycle at home or handwashed with bio soap in the field) and an individuals feet and walking action may have some contribution to make on how long socks last.
Another thing is I use up a great deal of shock absorbing insoles - it could be that they take some of the wear instead of the socks.......maybe.

John has a point, my feet seem to sweat acid as I chew through boot insoles very quickly.
That said the Falkes definitely outlast the Smartwool by a country mile. I'm going to be really rash now and say that I haven't worn through a pair of Falke yet. Cue a bloody big hole in the pair I put on tomorrow!

I swear by the british army arctic sock, I don't wear anything else in the field.
They are hard wearing, very comfortable and cheaper than name brand socks. I still have a couple of pairs that I was issued in 1994 and they are still good.
Another thing, I have walked miles in these socks and never had a blister with them.
I highly recommend them. Only problem you have though is getting hold of them, they are like gold dust but I have recently got hold of a couple of pairs in my local surplus store.
I live near a Camp so it was probably a squaddie selling his gear!

Just managed to grab a pair with the red stripe off ebay Greg for £2.99, I`ve been looking for some at a sensible price for ages.

I`ve contacted the seller to see if he has any quantity.

I've got a number of different types of socks, incl. smartwool & rohan although both of these are expensive although I got them with vouchers.

I do have a number of pairs of Coolmax thick boot socks from Decathlon & GO Outdoors both stores pricing reasonably.
