Found this log on the beach today and the inner bark and wood appears to have a brilliant orange colour. I dont know if this is contamination or something that the salt water has done but would like to identify it if possible, would make some lovely spoons if its a food safe wood

I would have to say Birch looking at the bottom pic. The lenticels and the sawn end look like birch to me. I think the orange colour is due to local contaminants and degradation.

First thought was Cherry, but that colour is a giveaway. I'm sure it's Alder. Plenty of images on Google that match the lenticels, bark, and colour.

I dont have a huge experience with wood but that bark looks like a huge amount of cherry that I had. After about a year the bark looked a deep orange/brown and looked very fibrous.

Why dont you cut the end off to see the grain a bit better?
