One thing about the desire to live on your own in the wilderness is that folk always quote H.D. Thoreau. In his books he talks about wilderness living and what I've read they are good books, but he was only about one and a half miles from his family home. There was a support network there if needed. And it's a fact that most folk overlook.
Richard Pronneke, a fantastic writer and wonderful craftsman had regular support by seaplane - though could easily have died in the time between visits. (Then folk die in town with folks next door and they don't know 'till they smell).
Another good writer on isolated living is Mike Tomkies, used to devour his books when I could get them and have been re-read many times.
